•收购卖得最好的股票;
•改善的销售策略;
•商店交付和供应商更好地管理。
Mr James Frost is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the “Blue Cut Fashion” clothing store. The store is located in the Melbourne Central shopping mall. Blue Cut (for short) specialises in blue cotton products. While the range of styles is limited, the Blue Cut clothes are popular with teenagers and young adults.
While James is quite happy with the store’s operation, his Sales Manager - Ms Jane Fry - suggests they could do a much better job in the future. She believes that the Blue Cut management should collect the necessary data related to various aspects of its business. Of course the data collected in Excel 2007 needs to be analysed and visualised to make a number of observations that would provide evidence of the store’s success or its shortcomings. Finally, a number of recommendations on how to improve the Blue Cut performance should be reported to the Blue Cut management. The following areas of improvement should be considered:
• acquiring the best selling stock;
• improving the sales strategy; and,
• better management of the store deliveries and suppliers.
Jane suggests that the observations should help answer a number of important questions (Hint: Take the time to consider why you think these questions are of particular interest to Jane and James):
Questions Difficulty 问题难度

Based on the advice from her Technical Manager, Franca De Lorenzo Jane estimates the level of difficulty in answering each of the questions as Easy, Challenging, Difficult andHardest. However, the level of difficulty really depends on the approach taken to answering each question. It is also possible that to give a specific recommendation many other questions (not listed here) may also need to be answered.
Aims:
To write a brief report in Excel 2007 identifying and explaining your insights into the operation of the Blue Cut Fashion store.
Learning Objectives:
In the process of this assessment task you will:
• learn to plan, schedule and execute project tasks with a view to improve your personal productivity;
• understand the issues related to the operation of a small-to-medium sized business;
• gain experience in seeking relevant information (such as Excel 2007 help);
• apply evidence-based reasoning in problem-solving;
• use the advanced functionality of Microsoft Excel 2007 to manipulate the sales and marketing data, analyse it and visualise it in tabular and chart form; and,
• write a brief report of your business observations and recommendations.
Method:
Your project will involve three important phases, which will require you:
• To use Microsoft Excel 2007 to assist your reasoning by combining, tabulating, reducing, cleansing, summarising and charting the available data.
• To itemise and report the insights gained from your analysis in a textual format that can be easily understood by business professionals.
• To clearly and directly reference all the reported insights referring to the evidence contained in the Excel 2007 charts and tables you have created.
Deliverables:
Your final report will be produced in the form of an Excel 2007 workbook. Its main purpose is to present your conclusions and recommendations to store management. You will base this advice on the summary information you have calculated and presented in the charts and tables generated from your data analysis. #p#分页标题#e#
As a starting point, an Excel 2007 template of the deliverable workbook will be provided and must be used in developing your report. The template and additional information about this assignment can be obtained online from Deakin Studies Online (DSO).
The template has the following RESULTS worksheets:
• Recommendations that identifies the author of this report (you!) and provides three most important recommendations about Blue Cut Fashion: (1) stock and sales, (2) suppliers and (3) record keeping. These recommendations must be clearly justified and based on the data in the observations worksheet.
• Observations that should include a number of clearly labelled (or numbered) charts and tables which answer the questions posed by the store management, and that highlight and report the most important characteristics of your summary information.
The results worksheets need to include your observations and recommendations - do not add any more worksheets - you are welcome to add rows and columns.
Your recommendations will be placed in the first worksheet, which should also accurately identify you as the author of this brief report. Ensure that all three recommendations are given about stock and sales, suppliers and record keeping. Ensure that they address the store management’s objectives, and that they are clearly linked to your observations. Make sure that your recommendations follow the format of a Sample Recommendation.
Your observations will be placed in the second worksheet and include charts, tables and reflections that can be derived from and linked (via formulas) to the data nine questions provided to you by the store management. Make sure that the format of your observations follows the example given in a Sample Observation!
The following DATA worksheets (included in the provided template workbook) will contain information collected over several days of the store’s operation, i.e.
• Stock which lists the store’s stock;
• Sales which details the summary of daily sales;
• Deliveries which provides information about stock deliveries from suppliers;
• Suppliers which identifies the store’s major suppliers; and,
• Measurement Period that identifies dates that sales and deliveries have been observed.
These DATA worksheets contain all necessary data for your assignment.
Stock worksheet includes the following information about stock kept in the Blue Cut store: the unique product category number, the supplier name, the style of each product category, its cut, targeted customer gender, its size, its colour, the item’s price (when sold to the customer) and its cost (when purchased from the supplier). The level of each product category’s stock on the first day of measurement has also been provided.
Sales worksheet that tabulates daily sales by Blue Cut over a period of time, across all products categories kept in stock. Each row of the table represents the sales on a single day, identified in the table’s first column. The subsequent columns list the number of products sold. Products can be identified by their unique category number in the table’s top row – the column titles.
Deliveries worksheet provides details of stock deliveries into the Blue Cut store. Each delivered product is uniquely identified by its delivery number (different
numbers are given for each product, even if a number of products are sent together in the same delivery), the name of transport company that delivered the products, the date and time of delivery, product received (as per stock table), and the quantity received.
Supplier worksheet provides some information about product suppliers, including: the company name, its address, state/country, phone, and the name of the contact person.
Measurement Period simply provides a calendar of days that observations about sales (day numbers in the left column) and deliveries (dates in the right column) have been collected and tabulated in other worksheets.
Some records included in the worksheets may be faulty or inaccurate, e.g. missing stock or supplier. You may need to detect these inaccuracies to avoid errors in calculations.
Further explanation of the collected data can be obtained from the interview transcripts conducted by Jacob with the Blue Cut Fashion staff. More details about these interviews will be provided later.
Hints:
While planning your workbook, and especially the observations, you may wish to review the tutorials on the related topics (e.g. Excel 2007 functions, formatting, chartings and managing large worksheets, as well as, on the analysis of Excel 2007 data and drawing recommendations).
The following remarks may help you in this assignment ...
Case study: The case study presented in this assignment may bear some resemblance to those previously used in this or some other units. You should note that relying on such similarity will be highly misleading as we have ensured that this assignment’s objectives and methods are unique, and the data provided to you has distinct features. So, in doing this assignment, use only the assignment details, templates and data provided specifically for the purpose of this assignment! Use only assignment documents provided by your teacher!
Problems, recommendations and observations: You are asked to provide a number of recommendations addressing the problems faced by store management. Each of your recommendations must explicitly reference your clearly labelled observations/summaries.
Integration of the relevant data: The observations and data worksheets seem to include some cross-referencing information. Such cross-references will help you tie in the related business information. You need to demonstrate (in your workbook) your ability to integrate the data across the worksheets without duplicating the data. You will need to show that such integration can be achieved via ‘live’ links, i.e. with the use of Excel 2007 functions and formulas (e.g. VLOOKUP or SUMIFS). You will lose marks for typing in, duplicating or copying (rather than calculating) the results.
Data Cleansing: You may find that in the process of data integration, some errors in data become apparent - you will need to demonstrate that you can detect these errors, even if the worksheets were very large. You need to clearly highlight and annotate data in error. You should not remove the errors, even if it is patently obvious how the errors could be corrected. The preferred method of dealing with these situations is for you to report data in error (for example, on the Observations worksheet), as an ‘Unknown’ or ‘Error type’ category wherever appropriate.
Charting of data: The business options considered by the CEO and the Sales Manager are linked to a number of questions. Your role is to answer these specific questions and support your answers with data analysis by presenting appropriate tables and charts on the Observations worksheet.
Decision support tools: There are numerous Microsoft Excel 2007 facilities and functions that may be useful in this project. Think what each of these can do for you: Chart Wizard (Pie, Linear, Column charts), VLOOKUP, HLOOKUP, COUNT, COUNTIF and COUNTIFS, SUM, SUMIF and SUMIFS, AVERAGE, ROUND, TEXT, etc. © Deakin University MSC120 Business Information Systems #p#分页标题#e#
Use your textbook and the Excel help (F1 key) facility to better understand these functions.
Do NOT use Tables (and Pivot Tables)! This assignment aims at learning Excel functions, if you use Excel tables, which bypass standard Excel functionality, your marks will be significantly reduced.
Difficulty of tasks: The questions posed to you in this assignment have been ranked according to their level of difficulty, from Easy, through Challenging and Difficult, to Hardest. It is expected that all students will succeed in the Easy tasks. Completion of the tasks ranked as Challenging and Difficult, is possible for those students who regularly attend tutorials and do the associated exercises. The tasks marked as Hardest will require quite a bit of planning and some independent thinking, self-directed study and reading the Excel 2007 textbook.
Assignment hurdle quizzes: You will be expected to complete two simple quizzes to test your knowledge of the assignment tasks. These quizzes are 'hurdles', which means they must be passed. Successful completion of these quizzes will provide evidence of your consistent work on this assignment throughout the semester. The first quiz will test your understanding of the assignment case study. The second quiz will test your understanding of the assignment results and your knowledge of submission procedures. Failure to meet these hurdle requirements will adversely affect your final assignment mark.
Progress on the assignment: You are expected to make regular and easily identifiable progress on the assignment. At any point of time, your tutor may request a demonstration of your Excel 2007 assignment in class.
The most important hint: There is no ‘ideal’ or ‘best’ way of doing this assignment. You’ll be assessed on your understanding of the summary information you generate from the data, on your ability to make observations by analysing (with formulas) and visualising (with charts) your data, and your ability to provide conclusions and recommendations based on your observations and understanding of business issues.
Assessment and Final Submission Instructions All students will be required to submit their Excel reports via DSO (Deakin students), TAFE or MIBT portal (external students) prior to the deadline.
We will only mark the formally submitted work. We will NOT accept any part of the assignment submitted after the deadline.
It is your responsibility to ensure that the correct assignment files are submitted on time and in exact accordance with the submission requirements, that it is a file saved in a valid version of Excel (2007), that the file is not damaged in any way, and that the file can be retrieved for review and marking. You must check and verify that your submission was successful (do not ask your lecturers or tutors to do this for you).
If the submitted assignment file could not be retrieved or open for marking, we will NOT ask for the assignment resubmission and the assignment mark will be entered as ZERO.
Note that your DSO portal has the facilities to submit your assignment early. Before the deadline, it is also possible to take back your previous submission and to resubmit an improved version of your assignment. You can also check the submission status and you can download the submitted files for checking their correctness. Ensure that you always have the most recent version of your assignment submitted in a form ready for assessment! A special laboratory exercise 1 week before submission will allow you to practise all these skills.
