Assignment 2 -- Castor Assembly Manufacture
This assignment is worth 60% of the total module mark
The following Module Learning Outcomes are addressed in this assignment:
• To analyse the manufacturing requirements of a product and to develop appropriate process plans.
• To design an appropriate manufacturing system with due consideration of relevant options.
• To design, build, test and improve an appropriate simulation model(s) in the analysis of a manufacturing problem.
• To analyse a manufacturing system and its associated performance characteristics.
A manufacturing company is considering setting up a unit to manufacture a small range of Castor Assemblies. There are 4 basic products:
2470DIK100P50
2470PJO100P50
2470PJP100P50
2470UAP100P50
These products are based on a similar design with all parts being identical apart from the wheel centres and wheel tread
Weekly orders are expected to have the following pattern:
Model Initial Orders: Orders in 12 months time:
2470DIK100P50 2500 4000
2470PJO100P50 1500 2500
2470PJP100P50 1000 1500
2470UAP100P50 500 800
Total
5500
8800
The company intends to rent a unit on an industrial estate in the Preston area in Lancashire, thus moving into what would effectively be a ‘greenfield site’.
The castor assemblies are to be manufactured according to the attached specifications – the version to be manufactured in each case is in the larger photograph.
You are required to produce a report for the company management that contains the following:
No. Description Marks
1. A list of all parts contained within the products Indicate whether they are to be manufactured ‘in house’ or purchased. Justify your decisions. 5
2. For the parts to be manufactured ‘in house’, draw up process plans, describe operations, estimate operation times, specify machines, etc. Use technical illustration where appropriate. 5
3. For the assembly operations, draw up plans, describe operations, estimate operation times, specify equipment, etc. Use technical illustration where appropriate. 5
4. Using suitable illustration, design a prototype system. Discuss the design options that are most appropriate at this stage, e.g. different equipment layouts, different systems of working, etc. State any assumptions that you make. This should indicate the approximate dimensions of the layout, equipment, etc. 20
5. Using the above information, build an Arena model of the manufacturing system. This should produce the appropriate statistical information for analysis. Also, it should be easily understood by senior management – the best way of achieving this is through the use of animation. 40
6. Utilising the Output and Process Analyzers, analyse the results. Modify the model in order to improve its performance and re-run the simulation. Discuss the critical factors of the system, i.e. what changes have the most significant effect. Make recommendations to management. 25#p#分页标题#e#

YOU ARE REQUIRED TO SUBMIT THE FOLLOWING:
No. Description
1. A disc containing all relevant Arena files e.g. model files (*.doe), picture libraries (*.plb), etc. The model must be able to be run from the disc on a networked PC.
2. A word-processed report with all sections as described in the marks allocation table.
NOTE: Information downloaded from the Internet must be read, understood and edited before using it in this report. All information used from any source must be correctly referenced.
Please post your submission to the appropriate assignment collection box on the first floor of the C&T Building.
SUBMISSION DATE: WEDNESDAY 4th MAY 2011
PENALTY FOR LATE SUBMISSION:
All assessments submitted late, but within 5 working days of the deadline, will be given a maximum mark of 40%. Assessments submitted more than 5 working days after the deadline will not be marked, and a mark of 0% will be recorded.
