Give Me A Cold One 请给我一杯冷的

Kim Min-Soo is a freshman at Sungkyunkwan University’s Seoul campus.  Every day during lunch, Min-soo walks down the long hill to local supermarkets to buy a certain drink.  In the winter, Min-soo is as cold as ice on his long trek.  In the summer, he is hot and sweaty.  Min-soo misses out on exciting lunch discussions and valuable study sessions with his friends.  There are other students like Min-soo at Sungkyunkwan University.  Those students drink Pepsi, not Coca-Cola. Sungkyunkwan University should offer Pepsi products on campus.  Pepsi should be on campus because students and faculty currently do not have the choice to buy Pepsi products on campus, getting products on campus would be very easy, and there are economical benefits from having Pepsi products on campus.

Students and faculty at Sungkyunkwan University do not have the freedom to purchase Pepsi, Mountain Dew, and other Pepsi products on the Seoul campus.  According to Forbes.com, Pepsi is the 106th most powerful company in the world.  Pepsi is well-known and Sungkyunkwan University prides itself on doing business with global companies.  However, people’s freedom of choice is stripped when they step onto campus because they are required to be slaves to Coca-Cola products.  In all campus buildings, there are numerous vending machines.  None of these machines carry Pepsi products.  This creates a problem for students and faculty who drink Pepsi products.  Some people add to the weight of their bags by carrying Pepsi to school each day.  Unless they have access to a refrigerator, the drinks get warm.  Other students waste valuable time walking off campus to area supermarkets that sell Pepsi products.  Sungkyunkwan University loses income because some people are spending money off-campus.  This problem does not have to continue if we implement a very simple solution.

In order to make Sungkyunkwan University a better place, university officials should allow the Pepsi Company to put vending machines on campus.  This solution may anger the Coca-Cola Company, but South Korea is a capitalist country and competition is normal.  First, contracts between Sungkyunkwan University and the Coca-Cola Company need to be renegotiated.  Second, contracts between the university and the Pepsi Company need to be made.  There is no doubt that Pepsi would pounce on the permission to sell their products.  It happens all the time around the world.  For example, at Robert Morris University in the State of Pennsylvania, USA, university officials said the Pepsi Company was“terrific” to work with and supplied vending machines all over campus in one day (Williams).  Third, Pepsi needs to install vending machines on campus like they did at Robert Morris University.  Finally, all the supermarkets on campus should be notified that they can sell Pepsi products.  Because Sungkyunkwan University’s Seoul campus is small, Pepsi could be added over night, and benefits could start immediately.

The benefits to having Pepsi products at Sungkyunkwan University would be huge.  The first benefit to having Pepsi products on campus relates to people like Kim Min-soo.  Students and faculty who prefer Pepsi products could walk outside of their classroom or office and easily find a vending machine filled with cold Pepsi, Mountain Dew, and other products.  There would be no more walking off campus or carrying around warm and weighty containers.  The second benefit would be the lucrative money Sungkyunkwan University could make.  For example, Sungkyunkwan could collect a commission or percentage of sales on each Pepsi product sold.  Another possibility would be money and free products supplied by the Pepsi Company if a contract is signed.  Pepsi often donates free drinks and snacks to universities around the world.  More importantly, they often donate large amounts of money for university research, departments, clubs, and buildings.  In 2003, John Leung explained that Calgary University’s deal with Pepsi earned the university money for research grants and funds for other programs.  A university official said the money went to “fellowships and research grants, as well as divvying a share to the Students’ Union and the Graduate Students’ Association” (Leung).  Sungkyunkwan University could reap similar benefits by having Pepsi products on campus.

There should be Pepsi products on Sungkyunkwan University’s Seoul campus.  The current lack of choice is unacceptable, getting the products on campus would be simple, and the potential benefits are valuable.  Sungkyunkwan University officials, however, will not suddenly make the decision to have Pepsi products.  Students and faculty need to talk with, write letters to, and write emails to the university officials.  You can write to the Dean at 53 Myeongnyun-dong 3-ga, Jongno-gu, Seoul, 110-745.  You can call the university at 02)760-0114.  Students and faculty need to buy Pepsi products off campus until university officials see the decline in spending on Coca-Cola products.  The short-term sacrifice of buying drinks off-campus will yield the future benefits of having Pepsi products on campus.  Join the campaign for Pepsi products on campus not only for Kim Min-soo’s sake, but also for the sake and well being of everyone at Sungkyunkwan University.
