英国管理专业留学生作业制定-Searching the Internet

1. A Double-Whammy
1.You need to answer the following questions by using both of the above search engines (Later you need to compare the effectiveness of the two of them):
1. What is 'citing'?
Citing is the way you tell your readers that certain material in your work came from another source. When, in your work, you use an idea from a book, journal article, etc., you must acknowledge this in your text. This is referred to as 'citing'.
2. What is 'referencing'?
Referencing is a formal system of indicating when an author's words or ideas have been used in academic writing, to properly credit them and avoid plagiarism.
3. What is 'plagiarism'?
Plagiarism is the copying or paraphrasing of other people’s work or ideas into your own work without full acknowledgement. All published and unpublished material, whether in manuscript, printed or electronic form, is covered under this definition. Collusion is another form of plagiarism involving the unauthorised collaboration of students (or others) in a piece of work.
4. What are the various forms of plagiarism?
a. Direct Reproduction;
b. Word Switch;
c. Sponsored Links;
d. Sources Not Cited;
e. Sources Cited Only Once;
f. Patch Writing;
g. Idea Plagiarism;
h. Style Plagiarism;
i. Repetition.
5. Explain and illustrate how you can get yourself suspected of plagiarism.
When you use the above-mentioned methods of plagiarism, there are a number of programs and Web sites available that make the process somewhat easier such as plagiarism detection software.
6. How does the University deal with suspected plagiarism?
It will support you through the process and arrange for a member of Congregation to accompany you to all hearings. They will be able to advise you what to expect during the investigation and how best to make your case.
7. How can you make clear that a specific part of a text is not your work or your idea, but is originating from someone else?
in the Harvard style of referencing?
in the Vancouver style of referencing?
Harvard system is a convenient nickname. It is sometimes called the name - date - letter system. If you are quoting from a book by Jane Doe published in 2002 you give the reference in the next in the form Doe (2002, 91-2). (Here 91-2 refers to the pages). If you quote from (or refer to) more than one publication by Jane Doe from 2002, you would have to add a letter and distinguish between Doe (2002a), Doe (2002b) and Doe (2002c). Some colleges, publishers and periodicals like a colon between the year and the page numbers, for example Dalton (2000: 44-50), so check the house style sheet for such details. Obviously, there has to be a proper bibliography (with a key) at the end. It is also most important that the short forms of works, such as Cuypers (2005) and so on are used consistently throughout the paper or book.
The Vancouver style of referencing is so named because it was first published by the Vancouver Group, which expanded and evolved into the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE).
The Vancouver style consists of the following elements:
(1) citations in the body of the paper, using consecutive numbers in parentheses. Note that some journals use superscript (raised) numbers rather than numbers in parentheses.
(2) a numbered reference list at the end of the paper giving the details of each source referred to.
For example, Halpern SD, Ubel PA, Caplan AL. Solid-organ transplantation in HIV-infected patients. N Engl J Med. 2002 Jul 25;347(4):284-7.
8. How should a web page reference look like
in the Harvard style of referencing?
in the Vancouver style of referencing?
On the basis of their different styles, such as:
a. the Harvard style of referencing: Cane, Candy. (2010). Trouble With Stripes. Available: http://candy.cane.com/oneofakind. Last accessed 31th March 2010.
b. the Vancouver style of referencing: Cancer-Pain.org [Internet]. New York: Association of Cancer Online Resources, Inc.; c2000-01 [updated 2002 May 16; cited 2002 Jul 9]. Available from: http://www.cancer-pain.org/.
2. Discuss the usefulness of the information provided by the HWU web site.
The information is useful. By the HWU web site, you can get many the newsletter and dissertation and so on. For instance, there are useful documents and literatures in its electronic library. What’s more, there are many other universities links.
3. Compare and contrast the use of HWU own search engine with using Google's site-only facility when searching the HW web site.
In process of using the two search engines, there are many differences. For example, you may use different keywords when search the same information.
In addition, HWU own search engine can provide more information about the HW web site which is more related to it as well as it is more useful.
2. Searching the Internet
1. Explain and illustrate for each of the following Search Engines for what kind of search situations they can be used best.
1. A primary search engine, e.g. Google - Ask.com
It reverted to being essentially a question-and-answer repository, utilizing its extensive history of archived query data to search sites that provide answers to questions people have. To avoid a situation in which no answers were available from its own resources, the company outsourced to Google the comprehensive web search matches that it used to gather itself.
2. A meta search engine, e.g. Dogpile
It take a user's request, pass it to several other heterogeneous databases and then compile the results in a homogeneous manner based on a specific algorithm. earch engines frequently have different ways they expect requests submitted. For example, some search engines allow the usage of the word "AND" while others require "+" and others require only a space to combine words. The better metasearch engines try to synthesize requests appropriately when submitting them
3. A Classified directory, e.g. The Open Directory
The Open Directory Project is a web directory of Internet resources. We care a great deal about the quality of the ODP. We aren't a search engine and pride ourselves on being highly selective. We don't accept all sites, so please don't take it personally should your site not be accepted. Our goal is to make the directory as useful as possible for our users, not to have the directory include all (or even most) of the sites that could possibly be listed or serve as a promotional tool for the entities listed.
You should take a few moments to understand these policies and the steps to submit a site before you begin.  Failure to understand and follow these instructions generally will result in the rejection of a submission.
4. Google Book Search
Before using Google Book Search, you sign up for an account in Google. Because the searching objects are books in Google Book Search, which is to help users find interested books. Therefore, your best choice is to search for related books.
5. Google Scholar
Get the most out of Google Scholar with some helpful tips on searches, email alerts, citation export, and more. For esample, Your search results are normally sorted by relevance, not by date. To find newer articles, try the following options in the left sidebar:
a. click "Since Year" to show only recently published papers, sorted by relevance;
b. click "Sort by date" to show just the new additions, sorted by date;
c. click the envelope icon to have new results periodically delivered by email.
6. Subject gateway / Subject launch pad e.g. Pinakes
Staff must be able to establish the context of a resource. Selected and evaluated resources are then given a description similar to a catalogue record. SOSIG records, for example, contain information such as title, description, keywords, language and URL (Uniform Resource Locator), plus a classification code.
7. Semantic Web
The Semantic Web provides a common framework that allows data to be shared and reused across application, enterprise, and community boundaries.
The web's usefulness and growth depends on its universality. We should be able to publish regardless of the software we use, the computer we have, the language we speak, whether we are wired or wireless, regardless of our sensory or interaction modes. We should be able to access the web from any kind of hardware that can connect to the Internet – stationary or mobile, small or large. W3C facilitates this listening and blending via international web standards. These standards ensure that all the crazy brilliance continues to improve a web that is open to us all.#p#分页标题#e#
2. Explain how you can refine your searches when working with keywords.
To search for a word, you could use a variety of claims or different perspectives. When build keywords, you should not to use natural language but the keywords extracted from natural language. The refining process is not easy, but you can adopt the following:
If know the solution to the problem yourself, how you answer it. In other words, guess the expression of the information, and then according to this expression, accept features keywords so as to achieve the search purposes.
3. Compare and contrast the usefulness of Wikipedia with the Discovery tab on the Library's home page while trying to find an article of your interest on both of them.
If you need help finding a particular piece of information, try asking a volunteer at the Wikipedia: Reference Desk.
The default search only applies to the Mainspace, where articles are stored. When searching for articles, a box on the right of the search results page shows the most relevant results from our sister projects, such as Wiktionary, Wikisource and Wikibooks.
4. How can you search for something you don't know what you are searching for?
First, search the general contents, and then according to the search results to the next step search. Now, many search engines provide search results to be refined and re-query. For example, there is a button “the query similar pages” in some search engines to search the results with a new round.
3. Evaluation
Through this assignment, I understand and master better the above-mentioned search engines, which contains the following aspects:
a. Cultivate the information consciousness and the ability to acquire new knowledge;
b. Acquaint with these search engines so as to find some more suitable search engines on request. For example, Google updates information with different servers gradually so that the update is slower. Therefore, if you need to query some latter information, Google search is inappropriate;
c. Master the methods and skills in using some common search engines so as to shorten greatly the time to query and collect datas to improve the accuracy rate in using literatures. For example, the keyword can be phrases with no space as well as sentences with a space in Google. However, the sentences must be added quotes;
d. Adopt different methods to use different search engines and master the correct retrieval method to make information required more comprehensive;
e. Learn to use the library more effectively to improve self-learning ability.
