QUESTION2
Upon completing her B.Com (Marketing) degree at Macquarie University, Stephanie decided to take six months off travelling to Asia on a holiday. However soon after her results were released she received a job from a marketing firm in Singapore for seven months,starting February 2010. She just cannot believe her luck. The job will require her to travel extensively to visit clients in Hong Kong, Vietnam, and Cambodia.
A former classmate advised her that the Federal Government has recently introduced changes to the taxation arrangements that apply to expatriates.
Stephanie has approached you for advice on the nature and scope of these changes and would also like to know more about whether these changes are likely to affect the tax treatment of her earnings from Singapore.
Your advice should outline:
• the background to the recent changes;
• the main issues that have been raised in debates about whether change is necessary; and
• the likely impacts that these changes will have on the tax treatment of her income during her 7 month stint in Singapore.
INSTRUCTIONS:
This task is designed to engage you with material outside our textbooks in relation to taxation issues.
The topics were covered in your lectures. However, this task is intended to provide you with a greater appreciation of how to deal with changes to the tax laws.
Possible sources that you may consult include - (but are not limited to) – the ATO website, the Treasury website, websites of professional accounting bodies and accounting firms, as well as the debate in the media generally.
