There are laboratory and field methods to assess haemoglobin and haematocrit in blood. The laboratory method used to measure haemoglobin is Randox kit (haemoglobin is oxidized to methaemoglobin then reacts with potassium cyanide, then the total concentration is related to the absorbance.)Lab method for haematocrit is using laboratory haematocrit centrifuge.
Anaemia is very prevalent in developing countries, in situations where highly precise laboratory methods are often unavailable. So portable methods of detecting anaemia have been developed. These include the Hemocue (we use the Hemocue Hb201), which measures haemoglobin, and the portable haematocrit (Compur 100 field miicentrifuge), which measures the proportion of blood containing red cells. The haematocrit is also known as the Packed Cell Volume (PCV) and is measured as a percentage. However, direct measurement of haemoglobin concentration is more reliable since haematocritmay occasionally be confounded by dehydration or diuretics in its ability to detect an impaired haemoglobin concentration.
The aim of this experiment is to examine haemoglobin and haematocrit results between laboratory method and field method. Twenty blood samples(5ml per sample) were collected from 20 students in MSc Nutrition 2013-2014 of King’s College London for the test.

Haemoglobin measured by field method is consistent with that measured by laboratory method which means the result of field method is reliable. haematocrit data from field method is significantly lower than that fromlaboratory method means field method for this is not that accurate.
