Imagery, Symbolism and Theme
As you have learned, imagery in literature refers to descriptions meant to appeal to the senses. These are used to create texture and tone in writing and include things like metaphor and simile. Symbolism is related to imagery in that “images” can also have reference to concepts or abstract ideas important to the theme of the work.
In an organized, thesis driven essay, analyze the imagery and symbolism in the novel The Lovely Bones by:
1) Writing an introduction in which you indicate author and title as well as a thesis statement that indicates your interpretation of the theme of the story
2) Using three to five (3-5) aspects of description (imagery) that the author uses symbolically to enhance the theme of the story.
3) Conclude with a paragraph or two that identifies the significance of using imagery and symbolism in literature. Also address why you think having a theme makes a piece of writing worthy of being called “literature.”
Write with the assumption that your audience has read the work and therefore does not need a summary. Use direct quotations sparingly and only with ample commentary and interpretation. Use MLA standards for citing your source, which means you must integrate your quotations into the paragraphs and provide pages numbers in parenthetical citations.
