Preparing the dissertation
The project write-up (dissertation) should contain the following sections:
1. Title page
2. Abstract
3. Background to the review
4. Critical review of the literature

Abstract
The abstract should be a 200-300 word summary of the project
Background
This section should provide a clear assessment of the importance of the area chosen for review in relation to for example a clinical condition or as a contributor to basic scientific knowledge. It should also state how (what search terms were used) and which databases were searched and how many articles were identified.
Literature review
The main section of the report where the content and arguments of the literature are debated. It is important to show evidence of your own criticial thinking around the subject, rather than just summarising the articles you have read. For example, is there agreement in the literature about the cause of a specific disease. If so is the evidence overwhelmingly in favour, or are there good reasons to think that additional factors may be involved? If there the topic is contentious what is the evidence on each side and where do you think the field will lead in future?
Conclusions
Your own scientific assessment of the field and your opinion as to what further work needs to be undertaken
References
The reference list should be presented in the style of Journal of Neuroscience. See the Journal’s instructions to authors for details. It is strongly recommended that you use RefWorks or similar bibliographic software to construct your reference list, training is available. (5% of the value of this unit).
Word limit
The total number of words should be no more than 6000.
Format
The dissertation should be in plain typescript (i.e. word-processed) and printed using a high quality printer. The dissertation should be printed 1.5 or double spaced and a typeface no smaller than 10
point should be used. Do not split the text into multiple columns.
Deadline for submission of dissertation
Prepare four identical copies of your project dissertation. The academic centre has binding facilities that you can use. Two copies of the project dissertation, written up according to the guidelines above should be handed in to the Academic Centre on 23rd March, 2012. You must give an additional copy of the project to your supervisor, and keep one copy for yourself.
We reserve the right not to mark any project that is submitted late. In this case you will be awarded a zero mark. From 2009/10 all coursework submitted via the Academic Centre will require a bar code cover sheet.

• Make sure the coversheet is the top sheet
• Staple all the sheets together
Plagiarism
There is college policy on plagiarism. You must read and make sure you understand and abide by this policy (see the following website).
It is particularly important when writing a project of this kind that you use your own words. Copying of large tracts of text from published work (or from previous projects) is not allowed, and you should be careful not to do this inadvertently. Project dissertations will be carefully checked against the source material using electronic means where appropriate. Details of how to submit your project report to Turnitin will be provided.
Examination of the project
The research project dissertation will be evaluated and marked by two members of the academic staff. The research project supervisor’s comments are also taken into account when setting a final mark. The external examiner for this course may moderate the marks. The assessment of the students project work accounts for 100% of the marks for this course.
