Comparative Essay/Report
With regard to their employment systems and HR strategies, compare and contrast two countries (of your choice) on the following:
a) National Context including:
i. Labour market demographics and employment data
ii. Cultural context,
AND One of:
either b) Role of the State
or c) Role of Managers and Employers
or d) Employee rights and representation
Students must offer explanations of similarity and/or difference. For example, if the cultural context of the USA differs from that of Germany, what factors might account for this variation?
The Report must be 2,500 words in length. The deadline for submission into registry is Monday 26th January 2008.
Grade A 80+
• As 70+ criteria but in addition answer demonstrates an excellent understanding of the question http://www.ukassignment.org/ and the complexity of the comparative issues involved relating to each point (a) to (d).
• Evidence of creativity and wide reading beyond core subject matter.
Grade A 70-79
• Comprehensive and accurate account of the comparative issues relating to each point (a) to (d)

• No significant omissions or errors.
• Very well written and structured.
Grade B 60-69
• Clear understanding of the question and includes the most pertinent comparative issues relating to each point (a) to (d).
• Sound basis of relevant factual knowledge and theoretical issue.
• A good analysis and evaluation of reasons for national variation and/or similarity.
• Evidence of extra reading beyond lecture material.
• Few significant errors or omissions
• Well written and structured.
Grade C 50-59

• Basis of factual knowledge and theoretical issues
• Some attempt at evaluation and/or analysis of reasons for variation or similarity.
• Material appropriate and logically structured but aimed primarily at the level of available lecture material.
• Some significant errors or omissions.
Grade D/E 35-49
• At the higher end of ‘D’ grade answer will demonstrate an understanding of the basic issues and some evidence that appropriate material has been selected.
• At the higher end of ‘D’ grade answer may follow a logical structure with the overall framework sensible.
However, an answer afforded a D/E grade will also demonstrate to varying degrees:
• No evidence of extra reading
• No evidence of evaluation or analysis of the issues
• Significant errors or omissions
• Poor planning
Grade F 1-34
An answer afforded a ‘F’ grade will demonstrate to varying degrees:
• Significant errors and omissions present throughout
• Poorly structured and written
• Little or no understanding of the question
• Little or no relevance to the question
• Inadequate material presented
