The assignments should be submitted to an IDPM Programme Administrator between
13:00-16:00 in University Place 3.204.
There are two parts in this assignment. The answers to the questions in the first part need
to be hand written and solved through with the help of calculator only (you should not use
computer for this part). The questions in the second part need to be answered using the
data sent to you through blackboard and the SPSS program. The explanations in the
second part can either be written by hand or on the computer.
There are 100 points in total, 20 points in the first part and 80 points in the second part.
The grade obtained from this assignment will constitute 20% of the final grade.
PART I
There two questions and 20 points in total in this section. Please solve these questions by
hand using calculator only (do not use computer) and explain your answers where
necessary.
1. Ms. Smith is the owner a restaurant. She believes that the main reason for her large
customer base is the wine she offers at a lower price with the meal. To investigate this
she records the daily sales for 10 days when she offers wine at a cheaper price, and the
daily sales for another 10 days when she doesn’t offer it at a cheaper price. The
following sales are recorded: (10 points)

Assuming that these data are a random sample from a normal population with the same
variance, investigate whether the belief of Ms. Smith is correct.

2. A consumer group concerned about the mean fat content of a certain grade of steak burger
submits to an independent laboratory a random sample of 12 steakburgers for analysis. The
percentage of fat in each of the steakburgers is as follows: (10 points)

The manufacturer claims that the mean fat content of this grade is less than 20%, which is the
mean value of fat content which is the maximum acceptable level of fat for health. Assuming
the percentage fat content to be normally distributed with a sample standard deviation of 3,
carry out an appropriate hypothesis test in order to advise the consumer group as to the validity
of the manufacturer’s claim.
PART II
The following questions will be answered using SPSS program and the data sent to you.
There are 8 questions in total and 80 points, the points allocated to each questions are
shown in the parenthesis next to the questions.
You need to provide an SPSS output for each question (except for questions 4 and 6) and where
necessary write down your explanations/interpretations after each output. You can write the
explanatory text by hand or using SPSS or word, provided that the text is written in the relevant
sections. You need to number each answer clearly and report your answers in the same order of
the questions shown below.
1. Using SPSS, create the natural log of “secondary” and “rgdppc”. Name the natural log
of secondary as “lnsecondary” and natural log of “rgdppc” as “lnrgdppc” and save
them. Create the scatter plot of lnrgdppc (real GDP per capita growth) against
lnsecondary with the fitted line. Is there any relationship between lnrgdppc and
lnsecondary. Explain your findings briefly. (10)
2. Using SPSS, test each of the following null hypotheses shown below and briefly
explain your findings. (15).
a. Africa’s average growth rate of real GDP per capita (rgdppcgr) is not different
from the average growth rate of real GDP per capita. (5)
b. There is no correlation between “Asia” dummy and the per capita growth rate of
the whole sample. (5)
3. Using SPSS, show the histograms of “lnpop” and “lnrgdp” and provide a brief
explanation about their distribution with reference to normal distribution. (Here you
need to create lnrgdp first. You also need find out how to insert the normal curve on top

4. Write down a regression model of the growth rate of real GDP per capita (rgdppcgr)
using the variables in the data and basing your model on economic theory. Write down
the expected signs of the explanatory (independent) variables you include in the model
and briefly explain your reasoning. (This part is purely theoretical; you will need to
construct your regression equation based on economic theories. Pay attention to the
signs you assign to the coefficients of the explanatory variables when constructing the
model and explain the intuition behind them. You can write down your answer in this
part by hand. You don’t need to provide citations of the articles). (10).
5. Using SPSS find the best fitted regression model with the help of model you have
specified in question 4. In this part you just need to report the best fitted final
“regression output table” (do not report all the other regression outputs you will need to

go through to find the best fitted model). Very briefly explain why you think it is the
best fitted model (do not provide explanations on the coefficients in this part). (8)
6. Explain your regression output reported in question 5. (Here you need to elaborate on
your results in details both in terms of the economic intuition and econometric validity
of your results). (15)
7. Briefly explain heteroskedasticy. Using SPSS, diagnose whether or not your regression
model has heteroskedasticity, (use only one of the methods of detecting
heteroskedasticity covered in class/ lecture notes/tutorial). (8)
8. Briefly explain multicollinearity. Using SPSS, diagnose whether or not your regression
model has multicollinearity (Use only one of the methods of detecting multicollinearity
covered in class and lecture notes). (8)
