Abstract

This study aims to examine the development objectives of the Jiaozuo City in particular and the entire region in general; to find out the specific ways that tourism has contributed in providing income and employment to the people in the community and the entire local government of the Jiaozuo region; to find out the measures that have been developed by the city to ensure that the tourism potential of the City is sustainable; to find out the lessons that other cities can learn from the Jiaozuo city’s experience in terms of developing their tourism potentials. In this study the aim of the researcher was to determine the effectiveness of tourism development in the local economic growth using the Jiaozuo City and its tourism potential as an example. In other to carry out the aim of the research, the researcher decided to divide the aim into measurable objectives. The researcher planned the work in such a way that the achievement of the objectives of the study was enough indication of the achievement of the aim of the study. The objectives of the study were to examine the development objectives of the Jiaozuo City in particular and the entire region in general, to find out the specific ways that tourism has contributed in providing income and employment to the people in the community and the entire local government of the Jiaozuo region, to find out the measures that have been developed by the city to ensure that the tourism potential of the City is sustainable and to find out the lessons that other cities can learn from the Jiaozuo city’s experience in terms of developing their tourism potentials. The researcher was also interested in any issue that is incidental to these objectives which are worthy of note.

The importance of every research is its aim and objectives because it is the reason for which the researcher expends resources. That is why the measurement of the success of a study is the direct measure of its ability to achieve its aim and objectives. In this study the aim of the researcher was to determine the effectiveness of tourism development in the local economic growth using the Jiaozuo City and its tourism potential as an example. In other to carry out the aim of the research, the researcher decided to divide the aim into measurable objectives. The researcher planned the work in such a way that the achievement of the objectives of the study was enough indication of the achievement of the aim of the study. The objectives of the study are:

The wealth and success of a group of people is usually a direct measure of the extent to which it is able to identify its key resources which are naturally given and how it adopts measures to develop it to its fullest level as well as ensuring that the wealth generated thereof is equitably distributed in such a way that each member of the society or community benefits from its equitably. It is this ability and effort that is usually used to measure the social wellbeing of the entire people. According to Briggs (2001) there are two main reasons why tourism can be a major source of economy growth. This he argues to the fact that tourism provides huge economic benefits to the local area in the form of employment and income as well as putting the entire area on the public map. In the study of Ramos & Jimenez (2008), they suggested a three dimensional benefits of tourism which includes improving economic opportunity, protecting natural and cultural heritage, and improving quality of life. The relevance of this study emanates from the above advantages. The research will also be significant in providing useful information for users of development information. In this way local government and central government policy makers will be equipped with first hand information on the specific contribution of the sector as well as information that is necessary in formulating guidelines for investment, tax assessment of private developers as well as budgetary allocation to support the sector.

In recent years the tourism industry has been seen as one of the most lucrative business ventures which are constantly in need of investors to complement the efforts of local administrator. In furtherance of this, the study will be important for such persons or potential investors who will be looking for some useful information to support their research efforts. It is also significant to note that this study is set within the boundaries where its findings will serve to contribute significantly to the stock of secondary information regarding tourism and it is potential. In this connection the research will be relevant to research institutes as well as up and coming academic researchers in the area of tourism such as University students. It is the estimation of the researcher that the findings of this study will contribute in no small way in putting the Jiaozuo City into public light. This has the potential of increasing the flow of people who patronise the tourism facilities or areas in Jiaozuo. Above all the relevance attributed to this study, this research will recommend tourism development models for economic growth through the case study of Jiaozuo City.
