Dissertation  Guidelines

MBA, EMBA & DBA 论文指导
I. GUIDELINES IN DISSERTATION WRITING
These guidelines shall cover all processes of Dissertation writing for Graduate or Doctoral Degree Programmes.
1. Definition
A The Dissertation is a major paper required by every student to earn a graduate or doctoral degree. The Dissertation is intended to give the student an opportunity to demonstrate his/her ability to conduct independent research on a specific problem within his/her field of specialisation. Any of these researches must have the following elements.
? It is a major paper concerning a research topic of interest to the student, significant, and contributory to the pool of knowledge in the field of specialisation enrolled by the student.
? It must be an individual piece of work, which should bring out the student’s research and professional competence within his/her field of specialisation.
? It must be a practitioner‐oriented scholarly undertaking with applied dimension and not a purely theoretical piece of research. As such, it must be a product of field research rather than a purely library work.
? It must be an original work. This means that it should not duplicate the content, form, and conclusions of any previous study.
Operationally, this means that research topics must have been checked by the student to avoid duplication. This checking for duplication is undertaken as a matter of routine in the process of preparing the review of related literature.
B Criteria for Acceptability
The Dissertation aims at validating the application of student learning into a competent and professional work. To be acceptable, each must show the support of the Dissertation Supervisor by the endorsement of the Dissertation proposal.
1. Evidence of comprehensive work means that:
1.1 the Dissertation is related to and meets the purposes of the approved proposal;
1.2 field of work and research are sufficient to meet the data requirements;
1.3 facts and computations are accurate;
1.4 appropriate analytical tools and techniques of research and analysis are used; and the draft is well‐typed and well‐written as to correct grammar and textual coherence.
2. Evidence of sound organisation of material includes the following:
2.1. findings are in the text and not buried in the exhibits;
2.2. there is a thorough coverage of subject matter;
2.3. facts are distinguished from opinions;
2.4. facts are documented;
2.5. sources are reliable.
3. Evidence of analytical competency and clear thinking means that:
3.1 the text presentation is logical;
3.2 there is clearness of purpose, ideas, problems, alternatives, and constraints;
3.3 the analyses and assumptions flow from facts and are reasonable; and conclusions flow logically from analysis and recommendations.
4. Evidence of creativity means that:
4.1 the research indicates transfer of student learning to a professional piece of work;
4.2 facts are interpreted, not merely repeated;
4.3 the work is useful, current, relevant, and meaningful to many;
4.4 the work highlights other related problems and explores further areas of research;
4.5 in the orals, the student must demonstrate his/her mastery of subject matter as well as articulate his/her findings and conclusions.
C. THE RESEARCH PROCESS AND RELATED REQUIREMENTS
The research process takes the student through the following steps:
1. selection of research topic;
2. selection and appointment of Dissertation Supervisor;
3. design of the research proposal;
4. approve of the research proposal by the supervisor;
5. implementation of the proposal and writing of the research;
6. submission of the written research for orals;
7. composition of the Dissertation Defence Panel;
8. schedule of pre‐oral and oral examinations;
9. final draft of Dissertation;
10. reproduction of the research manuscript and submission to the required offices/agencies.
I. Selection of the Research Topic
1. The student initiates preliminary research on a number of subjects, which he/she believes, meets the elements of a good Dissertation as the case may be. He/she determines the data requirements, the extent and sources of secondary information and the magnitude of primary data that have to be generated.
2. The source of research topic should be consistent with the curriculum of courses required of the degree programme being pursued by the student and his/her major field of specialisation.
3. The research topic must also reflect or be aligned with the objective of the Business School, the institutional mission of the University and regional and national development thrusts.
4. The students submit his/her research topic ideas to the Dissertation Supervisor for comment, revision, and approval, and then further submit to the International Office for further processing.
5. Each topic idea must be submitted on A4‐size bond paper, computerised and should contain a one‐page description of the topic which should also include the scope, depth, direction and, if there is any, similarity with any previously written research, how it will differ from it. A minimum of three topic ideas will be required for submission.
6. The Dissertation Supervisor shall examine the topic if any of them can be developed. If all the topics submitted can be pursued as Dissertation, the most original and relevant of them shall be recommended as the topic ideal to be developed by the student. The other topic ideas that are evolved but that the students may no longer need could be suggested to others for development or filed for future use. If none of the topic ideas submitted cannot be developed, the Dissertation Supervisor will formally communicate this to the student who shall undertake another research for possible development of topic ideas.
7. Upon the approval of one topic idea chosen as probable Dissertation shall be developed by the student, the student shall commence the designing of the research proposal with the assistance of his/her supervisor.
II. Selection and Appointment of the Dissertation Supervisor
1. The student is to have a Dissertation Supervisor to guide him/her in designing the research proposal, who may be selected as early as when the student submits the topic ideas.

The Dissertation Supervisor must be chosen according to the criteria listed in the following order:
1. Expertise in research area. Record of relevant publications. If the research requires multidisciplinary expertise, a co‐supervisor should be designated.
2. A faculty member can only have three (or maximum of five when necessary) active advisees per semester.
3. Student rapport with adviser must be wholesome.
The Dissertation Supervisor/s shall be duly appointed by the Registrar and Programme Director.
III. Design of the Research Proposal
1.
The research proposal is the basic research document, which spells out in details scope and responsibility of the researcher, in one sense it is a written contract between the student and the Dissertation Supervisor that specifies the job to be done and the manner in which it is to be done. It assures the student that there exists a mutual understanding between him/her and his panel in the objectives, scope, depth, direction, methods, and limitations of the proposed research.
 2.
The student is expected to design his/her own proposal under the guidance of the Dissertation Supervisor. It should be as detailed as possible and should contain, at least, the following items:
2.1 A discussion of the subject matter, which will serve as a general orientation of the problem area. Hence, it should include everything the student has gathered about the topic during his initial research, plus some speculation on how the research when completed will look like.
2.2 A definition of the scope, what topics will be covered by the research, what items will be left out, what questions will be answered and in what depth. This is critical to the research supervision.
2.3 A description of present and future areas of research, what has been obtained, the extent of and need for primary and secondary courses, a list of primary and secondary courses, and what information will be sought, what information is considered critical to the successful completion of the thesis.
2.4 A timetable of activities from start to finish.
3.
The student should submit the proposal to the Victoria University Business School, as endorsed by the Dissertation Supervisor, via the International Office. The Dissertation proposal format should consist of the following:
I. Title
II. Formulation of the Research Objectives
1. Statement of the Objectives
2. Significance and Value of the Study

2. When the Dissertation Supervisor signs the name on the research proposal form submitted by the student, it shall be honoured by Victoria University to respect the professional status of the supervisor and let the student start to write the Dissertation.
3. If the proposal is found acceptable, the student can accelerate his/her research writing activity. If not, then revisions of the research proposal may be undertaken or otherwise totally abandoned as per decision of the Dissertation Supervisor. In the latter case, the student goes through the whole process from the beginning.
4. The approved Dissertation proposal with all revisions incorporated therein shall be reproduced and duly signed by the Dissertation Supervisor. Upon meeting this requirement, copies of the approved proposal shall be provided to the Registrar and Programme Director for distribution.

ORAL DEFENCE PROCEDURES
A. Briefing of the Defence Panel
Before the student is called in to defend his/her Dissertation, the Defence Panel shall be informed of the following oral defence procedures:
1.
The time limit for the defence of the research shall be not more than 2 hours for a graduate or doctoral Dissertation. The Defence Panel must, therefore, try to ask all their questions within the period.
2.
The Defence Panel must consider the following when evaluating the oral defence:
a. contents of the Dissertation
b. style and presentation
c. students’ mastery of the research topic, findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
3.
The format or procedure to be followed during the defence is left to the discretion of the chairperson. The following however, may be suggested:
a. the student may be asked to summarise his/her Dissertation;
b. then the panel members may ask questions on the entire Dissertation;
c. then, after the general questions, the panel may want to review the Dissertation chapter by chapter;
d. finally, the panel may cover the style and presentation of the case.
4.
When there are no more questions from the Panel, the student will be asked to leave the room and wait for the chairperson’s recall. The Defence Panel will fill up the rating form and the average of ratings computed. The Panel will agree on suggestions for revision, if any. Then the student will be called.

5.
The Chairperson of the Panel will inform the results of the ratings and suggestions to the student.
B. Role of the Dissertation Supervisor
The role of the Dissertation Supervisor is to give advice, to counsel, to suggest. Definitely, he/she should not be a co‐author or a collaborator. The research is the candidate’s creation, not the Supervisor’s.

Yet, the Dissertation Supervisor is not a mere fixture, or a disinterested spectator. His knowledge of the problem area is a major reason for his selection. He/she is chosen because he/she can guide the candidate in the preparation and writing of the Dissertation. The candidate though must take the initiative in arranging for conference with the Supervisor.

The Dissertation is both matter and style. The Dissertation Supervisor not merely judges the contents but must see to it that the paper conforms to the prescribed form and style of the Dissertation.
The Dissertation Supervisor is responsible for reading the final copy of the accepted Dissertation format, grammar, and content.
C. Circulation of the Dissertation
The research is an academic requirement. It has been and can be reproduced by a course professor as a teaching device for the benefit of future classes at Victoria University Business School.
? The research is public document. Copies of each Dissertation are available for reading in the Victoria University Business School and the Library.
? As the research is public, it cannot be kept confidential. For every important and exceptional reason, however, the research may be kept confidential for a period of one year. A student etching confidentiality for his/her search will first have to make a written request, to and get the approval of the Dean.
? The student who may be hired by a firm for a study should make the employer/firm realise the nature of the research and the manner of its circulation.
D. Consulting Arrangements
A student may be paid by a third party for his/her Dissertation. The amount is a matter of negotiation between the student and his/her prospective employer. Three points should be clearly understood:
? The research is primarily an academic requirement and a public document;
? The research is not the contractor’s exclusive property;
? Acceptance by the contractor of the quality of the research does not imply acceptance by the Defence Panel.
E. Form Letter
A standard form letter has been prepared to assist students in securing information or seeking interviews from sources external to the Victoria University Business School.
As the letter indicates, these items must be supplied to fill it in:
? the name and title of the person addressed, and the company/establishment address;
? the titles of the Dissertation;
? the specific information required, and/or the names of the persons to be interviewed;
? the signatory of the letter. (Normally, the Dissertation Supervisor will sign the letter).
Please note that the letter leaves the decision of permitting access entirely to the person addressed. The letter also implies that information obtained will be accessible to others via Victoria University Business School.
F. Academic Listing
Pending the approval of the Dissertation and the confirmation of Board of Regents, the student remains a candidate as the case maybe after his name in any academic listing.
