The Fall of Google Glass 谷歌玻璃的坠落

At the beginning of development of computer and information, the major limitation used to be the memory, load space and loading speed of computer. However, as time moves to the 21st century, these problems have been all solved. Then new problem occurs, how computer could gather as much information as possible to analysis. According to Billinghurst and Starner (1999), wearable device is the best answer. Though the earliest wearable devices could trace back as early as 1970s, the first real modern wearable device that attracts universal attention is Google Glass, which firstly introduced to public in 2012 and Google recently announced to that the current Google Glass Explorer Edition hardware will only be available to business customers after January 19, though Google is reportedly working on a new version of Glass for release later this year. Tough this move of Google has been predicted by the industry since tons of negative comments on its performance after the initial passion. Then curiosity occurs, why under the fever and trend of wearable devices development, pioneer product such as the Google Glass Explorer, which attracts attention and interest of the whole world, suddenly falls?

Google Glass was firstly introduced to public in April 2012. It combines many functionalities on the purpose of making live easier and more convenient, including smart phone, GPS, camera, taking and loading pictures, send and receive text messages, check the weather, surf the Internet without hands, and use voice control to take picture, call, and take bearings. After it was firstly unveiled in 2012, It was the must-have toy that was going to set the gold standard for a new class of wearable computers.

However, only two years after its debut, Google Glass is announced to shut down. There are three major reasons. Firstly, Google Glass itself is not fully completed when it was introduced to public. According to The New York Times (2015) report, the killer functionality of the Glass suffered fierce argument such as if it should be wearing all day, how it deals with privacy conditions, etc. It is safe to say that Google brought a premature product to the public. It is no wonder that the market finally finds out these weaknesses and stops buying. Secondly, the price is too high. Though from the beginning to now, it is always announced as the public experimental period. It costs as much as USD1500, which roughly equals two latest iPhone. The price proves that its marketing location is a cool toy. When the public ceases to curious on it, and media reported it actually not so user friendly or useful. The cool toy becomes not cool. Less and less people would like to pay such big amount of money on it. Thirdly, according to Tim Cook, the Chief Executive Officer of Apple, though wearable device is the unavailable trend of technology development, Google Glass is too invasive. Therefore it dooms to fail. According to him and the team of Apple Watch, one of the key points of wearable device is that it should be a part of the users daily life, an expansion of human body, which makes people’s life easier and more convenient when they don’t even notice. This also explains that why during the tremendous wearable devices, most developers select watch, such as Samsung Gear, Apple Watch, etc.

Therefore, due to lacking of killer application and premature of its development, price is two high, and the product theory itself too invasive, which against daily life habit, Google Glass public experiment was recently announced to as a failure in the commercial field. Though it is still reasonable to expect a more powerful and more completed Google Glass phase two in future, or it may enjoys great potential on research purpose such as associating doctors during surgeons, police on crime scene.
