Project Introduction
This project is the final project before I graduate, I will try my best to get high grades. In this project, I will conduct my research and analyze the brand strategy of United Airline. It is important to identify the problems at hand, so that effective and efficient solutions can be identified. A combination of SWOT, PEST and various other analysis tools will allow me to focus on the factors that matter the most to UAL, and their current strategy of branding and marketing.
Executive Summary
We know United Airline is one of the famous airlines in the world, and has a long history airline company. Actually, it still has some terrible problem and deficiency close to successful.
In analyzing United Airlines Corporation (UAL) I founded UAL Corporation (United Airlines) is one of the largest airlines in the world, and has one of the most extensive route networks due to its aggressive expansion and participation in Star Alliance. In the past few years, United has gone emerged from bankruptcy and registered one of the largest pension defaults in Corporate America.
The challenges facing UAL is vast, but the current economic environment and the company’s reputation amongst its customers are its biggest. United is just exiting bankruptcy, and has less than impressive financials. Yet, due to the exit barriers that airlines face, United must constantly make investments and strategic decisions to stay competitive in the industry. In May 2008, United Airlines was listed last amongst US-based airline carriers for customer satisfaction, an 11% decrease over the previous year. They have also delayed launching new routes, the Guangzhou-San Francisco route was originally scheduled to launch in April 2008 but has since been delayed due to fuel costs.
This project will seek to analyze United Airline’s competitive advantage and the struggles they must overcome to improve their market leadership. A proposal will be made after the analysis of all internal and external factors on the best approach for United to retool their organization or long-term strategies to achieve their desired market recognition.
The airline industry is a large and growing industry. It facilitates economic growth, world trade, international investment and tourism and is therefore central to the globalization taking place in many other industries. While United Airlines has made many great improvements in the marketing and company internal management, the whole industry brings them variety problems and pressure, like increasing cost-operation cost in fuel during this financial period. As with many long-lived airline companies, United Airlines has had their ups and downs and has persevered through the years. Their struggle with the unions and health costs are an issue they share with many of their original competitors (AA and NWA) however these costs do not afflict their largest threat, Singapore Airline, one of the strongest brands from Asia. It has consistently been one of the most profitable airlines globally, and has always had the reputation of a trendsetter and industry challenger. How United Airlines against these powerful competitors? I am sure they can do much better than Singapore Airlines and also any other airlines. I don't believe that weak financials will really affect their ability to compete in the industry. Airlines are constantly in and out of bankruptcy, yet always end up back on their feet, with new operations and new competitive strategies. I will use the marketing strategic to analyze United Airlines, to find out what is the competitive advantage of them, to help them win the market, become the first choice come into customer mind, just like people want to have a cup of coffee, Starbucks will first reflect in their mind. It is the one of largest airline company’s in the world by passengers carried, distance flown, and number of planes.
United Airlines is the second largest American airline, after the merger of Northwest and Delta. It is consistently ranked as one of the largest airlines in the world, and has exposure to regional problems due to its global reach. It competes vigorously with low-cost carriers in the U.S. domestic market, but not so in the international level.
International presence, notably large focus on Mainland China.
To insulate itself against the highly competitive and low-margin U.S. domestic market, United has been focusing on expanding its international routes. It flies direct from multiple U.S. cities to Chinese cities, such as Beijing and Shanghai. Many of these flights are available on a daily basis to and from China. In June of 2009, they will begin a non-stop route connecting Guangzhou to San Francisco.
History
Beginning
Walter Varney is the founder of Continental Airlines. UAL is the oldest airline commercial company in the United States to the Varney Airlines air mail service of him. The United Airlines Company was both on April 6, 1926 and start their "true" airline service—operating on fixed routes and fixed schedules—began in the United States. William Boeing, the people who founded the Boeing Air Transport and began buying the other air airmail carriers in 1927. Just 4 years, it become holding include airlines, airplane and parts manufacturing companies, and several airports. In 1929, the company changed its name to United Aircraft and Transport Corp. In 1930, the airplanes proved enough capacity to carry not only mail but also passengers. In 1930, after the president Philip G. Expansion
The earliest routes of United’s are only air mail routes alone the West Coast and Midwest. During World War II, the airplanes were use as bombers, and transported mail, material, and passengers in the war effort. Post-war United benefited from both develop the new airplane technologies and a boom in customer demand for air travel.
Establish
The company merged with Capital Airlines on June 1, 1961, making it the world's largest commercial airline and giving it a route network covering the entire United States.
In 1968 the company reorganized, creating UAL Corporation, with United Airlines as a wholly owned subsidiary. On December 23, 1973, then President Richard Nixon flew as a passenger aboard a United DC-10 flight from Washington Dulles to Los Angeles.
Development
They failed to seek their oversea routes in the 1960s because of the Transpacific Route Case and did not gain any overseas routes until they began flights to Tokyo from Portland and Seattle in 1983. By the end of 1986, United operated flights to 13 Pacific destinations.
The Mileage Plus was launched one week after rival American Airlines launched AAdvantage in May 1981. But the Wall Street Journal mistakenly reported United's program to be the first.

Re-Name
Mr. Ferris changed United's parent company's name from UAL Corporation to Allegis in February, 1987 but the name change was short lived. Following Ferris' termination by the board, Allegis divested its non-airline properties in 1987 and reverted to the name UAL Corp. in May, 1988, that helped clear the path for the United Pilots to do an ESOP takeover of United, which eventually did happen in 1994.

The September 11, 2001 terrorist attack was the famous accidents in the world. One of the United Airlines planes were hijacked by terrorists that crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. and the other was a Boeing 757-222 that crashed in rural Pennsylvania. Only United and American Airlines were significantly affected on September 11, 2001.
Chapter 11
In 2002, United Airlines warned that it will file for bankruptcy court protection this fall unless it succeeds in lowering costs dramatically through restructuring. It has amassed a total of $7.83 billion of debts against its $7.81 billion of assets. Star Alliance
In 1997, United co-founded the Star Alliance with Air Canada, Lufthansa, SAS and Thai Airways. It is the world’s first and largest airline alliance. Star Alliance has since grown considerably and now has 21 full and 3 regional members, with another four expected to become full members by 2009.
That same year, United opened a major hub at Los Angeles International Airport. In 1998, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines introduced a marketing partnership included a reciprocal redemption agreement between SkyMiles and Mileage Plus programs and shared lounges.
Milestone
1926
One of the successful bidders by Walter T Varney, who launched air mail service over a desolate stretch of ground on April 6, 1926. That day marked the true beginning of commercial air transportation in the United States. Because Varney was a predecessor of United, it also marked the birth of United Airlines.
1927
National Air Transport (NAT) expands its operations to a Chicago - New York route, connecting with BAT at Chicago, to establish the first transcontinental passenger air service.
1930
The industry's first stewardesses took flight on May 15, 1930, aboard this Boeing 80A trimotor. BAT, one of United's predecessor subsidiaries, introduces the world's first stewardess service on Boeing 80A trimotor flying between San Francisco and Chicago.
1937
Congratulate as the last word in air travel in its day, the Douglas DC-3 Sky lounge Mainliner featured 14 deep-cushioned swivel seats and sponge-rubber hassocks for footstools. These made the passengers feel happy in this friendly atmosphere.
1942
United's bomber modification center at Cheyenne, Wyo., was busy with activity during World War II. Between Jan. 2, 1942, and July 31, 1945, the facility retrofitted 5,736 Boeing B-17 bombers with equipment the factory could not install because of heavy production schedules.
1947
The postwar Douglas DC-6 Mainliner carried 24 passengers with sleeping compartments for overnight travel, and 58 when configured for daytime travel. A popular feature of the DC-6 was the aft lounge, where passengers could dine, play cards or just visit.
1957
Ten years after publishing one issue of its pioneering in-flight magazine, Mainliner Traveler, United begins regular production of an in-flight magazine and calls it simply Mainliner. United's in-flight magazine changed in design and content, but kept the Mainliner name until 1983, when UNITED magazine was born.
1969
They introduce the first tri-engine Jet to enter United States commercial air service. United's Boeing 727 provided the convenience of jet service to passengers flying short-to-medium range routes.
1970
Airline service soared to new heights when United introduced its wide body Boeing 747 Friend Ships on California-Hawaii routes in July 1970. The 342-passenger jumbo jetliner quickly won passenger approval, and versions of the 747 remain a favorite aircraft in United's fleet.#p#分页标题#e#
1987
Called the "Terminal for Tomorrow" when it opened in 1987, United's facility at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport boasted state-of-the-art features for travelers and employees. The terminal was the keystone of the airport's $1.6 billion expansion in the 1980s.
1993
One of the most technologically advanced aircraft in United's fleet, the 144-passenger Airbus A320 brought to the industry the highly sophisticated "fly-by-wire" technology that allows wing and tail surfaces to move via electronic signals. The A320s was launched by United in December in 1993.
1995
The first Boeing 777 service was on its Washington, D.C.-London Routes. More than 20,000 men and women worked on the five-year project that culminated in June 1995 with United's introduction of the world's first "Triple 7" service.
1997
Star Alliance, the most comprehensive partnership in the history of commercial aviation, was launched May 14, 1997, by United, Air Canada, Lufthansa, SAS and Thai International. Brazil's Varig Airlines joined Oct. 26, 1997, and both Ansett Australia and Air New Zealand became members March 28, 1999.
1999
United is leading of first one to offer a sleeper seat that lies flat when United First Suite debuted on March 5, 1999 on a flight from San Francisco to London. United First Suite provides international United First customers with a roomy seat that can be an office workspace or recline 180 degrees to form a six-foot, six-inch bed.
2000
E-Ticket technology was innovated and implement by United Airlines, which has sold to 14 airlines worldwide, is recognized as industry leading by the Smithsonian Institution. It becomes part of the Smithsonian Permanent Research Collection on Information Technology at the National Museum of American History.
2002
The SOFIA- a project United has been involved in since 1996 - passes an important milestone when the telescope assembly for SOFIA arrives in Texas from Germany. SOFIA is a highly modified Boeing 747 SP that will carry an eight-foot-wide, 16-ton telescope to an altitude of 45,000 feet, allowing much more precise observations than any ground-based telescopes.

Ownership
As we know, in 1927, airplane pioneer William Boeing founded his own airline, Boeing Air Transport, and began buying other airmail carriers, including Varney's. Within four years, Boeing's holdings grew to include airlines, airplane and parts manufacturing companies, and several airports.
Following the Air Mail Scandal of 1930, the Air Mail Act of 1934 banned the common ownership of manufacturers and airlines. United Aircraft-Transport's President Philip G. Johnson was forced to resign and moved to Trans-Canada Airlines, the future Air Canada. William Boeing's company was broken into three:
A parts supplier (the future United Technologies)
An aircraft manufacturer (the Boeing Airplane Company)
An airline group—United Air Lines.
The airline company's new president, hired to make a fresh start as airmail contracts were re-awarded in 1934, was William A. Patterson, who remained as president of United Airlines until 1963.
In 1994, United's pilots, machinists, bag handlers and non-contract employees agreed to acquire 55% of company stock in exchange for 15% to 25% salary concessions. The flight attendants voted to not participate in the deal, and at the beginning some wore buttons saying "we just work here." The Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) made United Airlines the largest employee-owned corporation in the world.

United Business Suite is offered on select internationally configured Boeing 767-300 and Boeing 747-400 aircraft. All seats are 6 feet-4 inches long and have 180 degrees of recline, creating a fully-flat bed. United Business Suite is the first truly lie-flat business seat to be offered by a U.S. airline. Infants and toddlers Service
Bassinets are provided, free of charge, on all international aircraft (747, 767 and 777). When confirming your reservations, you may request a seat in an appropriate location for bassinet usage. Since the passage of the 1978 Airline Deregulation Act, air travelers in the United States have enjoyed lower fares and greater choice in service. Despite the success of domestic liberalization in the United States, the European Union, and elsewhere, international air travel is still heavily regulated, and the U.S. domestic air travel market remains closed to foreign competition.#p#分页标题#e#
Under current restrictions, non-U.S. citizens can control no more than 25% of the voting stock of a domestic U.S. carrier, and foreign-based carriers are not allowed to carry paying passengers between U.S. cities. To achieve the full benefits of an open aviation market, Congress should grant foreign-owned carriers the right to provide domestic air service in the United States.
Opening U.S. skies would inject capital and competition into the U.S. aviation market, leading to even lower fares and more improved service, especially on feeder routes to destinations overseas. United Airlines Unions Consider Response to Federal Government Takeover of Their Pensions
United Airlines has underfunded its pension for union ground workers by billions of dollars and now the federal agency insuring pensions is moving to take over the pension plans. Richard Turk of the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association says the union doesn¹t like the government takeover of the pension plan which will cut pensions by more than 20%.
The AMFA and the International Association of Machinists both represent thousands of United Airlines ground workers affected by the government pension takeover. Turk says the AMFA is considering its options for fighting the takeover.

With gas prices becoming high, many Americans are rethinking their travel plans. The high price of gas not only affects road, but also the air travel. With the cost of oil rising as high as $135 per barrel, airlines face significantly increased costs for jet fuel and have hiked fares while cutting service.
High gas and oil prices are affecting Americans' pocketbooks in other ways as well. The truth is that the cost of regular gas is $3.80 a gallon, 19 percent higher than in May 2007 and four times as high as five years ago. The cost of a gallon of diesel fuel, used to run most trucks, is $4.54 a gallon. As it becomes increasingly expensive to fill a truck's tank, the cost of transporting goods, particularly food, to markets also jumps. This means that as Americans pay more for gas.
The House of Representatives recently passed a bill calling on the Justice Department to sue the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) for limiting supplies and collaborating to set prices. The Senate has not yet voted on the measure. Bush has threatened to veto the legislation, saying it would spur retaliatory action against the United States. Two-thirds of the House and Senate must vote to override a president’s veto for a vetoed bill to become law.

Continental to Join Star Alliance and Partner with United
Continental Airlines and UAL Corp's United Airlines announced a global cooperation plan on Jun 2008, the latest move in the dance between major U.S. carriers as they weigh mergers and alliances to help combat soaring fuel prices.
Shares of Continental, UAL and all the major airlines jumped on Jun, largely due to a dip in the price of crude oil futures. UAL shares closed up $1.56, or 24%, at $8.11 on Nasdaq, while Continental rose $2.15, or 16%, to $15.59 on the New York Stock Exchange.
Continental and United are looking to establish joint ventures allowing them to cooperate with each other and with other Star Alliance airlines in international regions.
They also plan to operate codeshares on domestic flights, meaning both carriers can sell tickets on the same flights, which reduces marketing and operational costs.

Transportation Energy Efficiency
Today’s aircraft are 70% more fuel-efficient per passenger-kilometer than the aircraft of 40 years ago; most of this improvement has come from increasing passenger capacity but gains have also been achieved by reducing weight and improving engine technology. Options for further reducing energy use in aviation include laminar flow technology and blended wing bodies, 26 both of which reduce air drag, and further engine improvements and weight reductions. Obviously, the overall efficiency of road, air, and rail transport also depends to a considerable extent on utilization: higher occupancy ratios on buses, trains, and airplanes will result in lower energy consumption or emissions per passenger-mile.
Technology options for reducing energy use in the shipping industry include hydrodynamic improvements and machinery; these technologies could reduce energy use by 5–30 percent on new ships and 4–20 percent when retrofitted on old ships. Since ship engines have a typical lifetime of 30 years or more, the introduction of new engine technologies will occur gradually. A combination of fleet optimization and routing changes could produce energy savings in the short term; reducing ship speed would also have this effect but may not be a realistic option given other considerations. It has been estimated that the average energy intensity of shipping could be reduced by 18 percent in 2010, and by 28 percent in 2020, primarily via reduced speed and eventually new technology. This improvement would not, however, be enough to overcome additional energy use from projected demand growth (shipping is estimated to grow 72 percent by 2020). Inland ferries and offshore supply ships in Norway are using natural gas in diesel ship engines and achieving a 20 percent reduction in energy use, but this option is limited by access to liquefied natural gas and cost. Where natural gas is available and especially where the gas would otherwise be flared, use of liquefied natural gas as a ship fuel could produce significant emissions reductions. United Airlines cuts fuel use, emissions in test program
A Boeing 747 operated by United Airlines managed Friday to save 1,564 gallons of fuel and 32,656 pounds of carbon emissions during a single flight from Australia to the U.S. by incorporating fuel-sipping technology and practices, including using a gentle descent, that aviation officials hope will one day become the norm.
“The fuel savings could have been substantially higher, about 2,600 gallons, if the flight hadn't been forced to skirt a large thunderstorm”, said United spokesman Jeffrey Kovick.
United and Boeing Co., both Chicago based, are involved in the research effort along with Boeing rival Airbus SAS and four airlines based around the Pacific Rim. Air New Zealand plans to conduct the first sustainable biofuels test flight next month using a Boeing 747.
One of the most promising techniques involves landing aircraft via low-power, continuous glides that follow a path charted by FAA computers. United estimates each flight using these so-called tailored arrivals saves hundreds of gallons of fuel.
But the process isn't perfect, and the technology is fledgling. Air traffic controllers have to watch closely for other aircraft that could stray near the planned flight path. But the data gathered during this process are being used to form next-generation ground radar that would help keep scores of aircraft in sync.
