Since then, EDF Energy has grown steadily and fast to integrate and streamline its operations and won a leading marketplace in the competitive environment. In 2009, EDF Energy acquired British Energy to form one of the largest energy companies in UK. In addition, the acquisition also made the combined business become the largest producer of electricity in UK. Owned by EDF group, EDF Energy benefit a lot from the financial strength as well as combined procurement capabilities, pan-European dealings for major customers, international expertise and access to significant R&D resources of its parent group. EDF group, one of the three largest energy companies in Europe, operates in the large scale almost covering the whole energy supply chain including generation, trading, transmission, distribution, supply and other energy services. EDF group has key business interests in Germany, Italy, France and the UK and has investments in 21 countries (12 of these in Europe) and offers services and consulting business in 35 countries.( EDF Energy,2014 )  EDF Energy as part of EDF group has also followed and obeyed the same principles and strategies set by its parent group. It seek to increase business value through continued operational excellence, achieving maximum value from its existing nuclear and coal assets, increasing downstream profitability based on a fair risk reward relationship with customers, and by leading the revival of nuclear new build in the UK. Besides, as the leading company in energy industry, government interventions and regulations are inevitably playing important role in EDF Energy strategy for the energy supply is closely related with daily life of residents and other economic production. Though the current economic is in the downturn path, demand for clean and green electricity is intended to increase in the future as more and more governments are paying special attention to reduce the carbon emission in the process of energy generation and to switch from gas and oil to low-carbon electricity particularly in the heat and transport sectors.  Therefore, EDF Energy has invested large amount of money on developing renewable energy and nuclear energy station. Four new nuclear reactors in the UK: a twin at Hinkley Point and a further twin at Sizewell are planned to build by EDF Energy. These construction plans are approved by UK relevant governmental bureaus and supported by the residents who live not far from the station spots. If these stations can be built successfully, the emissions of more than 10 million tonnes (t) of CO2per annum will be avoided (EDF Energy, 2014). What’s more, in order to support and implement this strategy, EDF group make more investments on UK and USA instead of other areas in Europe because the policies in these two countries are in support of developing nuclear power while some countries such as Germany are already abandoned the development of this kind of power.  Other important strategic actions for EDF Energy contain delivering the new West Burton B Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (“CCGT”) and a fast cycle gas storage project, managing the impact of the phase out of coal generation capacity driven by the Large Combustion Plant Directive (“LCPD”) and the Industrial Emissions Directive (“IED”), securing lifetime extensions for existing
nuclear plants, and continued delivery of renewable generation projects. (EDF Energy, 2014)

The strengths of EDF Energy come from its strong financial support and integration benefits from its parent group. The large coverage of area and population of EDF Energy helps it to win the marginal investment reduces in cost. In addition, the businesses of its parent group cover large number of production areas in energy supply chain including generation, trading, transmission, distribution, supply, thus gaining advantage of EDF Energy in procurement capabilities, pan-European dealings for major customers, international expertise and access to significant R&D resources. This advantage helps EDF Energy a lot in controlling costs of production and fundamental facilities building and extending its operation to other areas. What’s more, EDF Energy shares the same customer base with its parent group and it offers added-value products which is also part of its parent group’s products, which also helps EDF group to reduce investments in marketing and customer service. Since the parent group of EDF Energy has implemented vertical integration well in energy industry and also shares these resources with EDF Energy, it is unnecessary for EDF Energy to follow this strategy for it could lead to repeated investments on facilities building which are huge in energy industry. Besides, since energy industry, quite different from other industry, has close relationships with national security and should offer power guarantee to sustain many other industries, it are regulated by government of different countries. Some countries such as Germany even banned the development of nuclear power.
