For essay, you will write an extended definition essay. In an extended definition essay, the writer defines and explains a term based upon his or her perspective. For this assignment, please choose abstract terms where people have differing interpretations. For example, many students choose to define terms like "hero," "mother," "friendship," "loyalty," “teacher." You may also define terms slang terms or terms used in popular culture such as "bling." See below.
"Why Do We Define?"
1. To clarify an abstract term or concept(“hero,” “success,” “friendship,” “loyalty”)
2. To provide a personal interpretation of a term that the writer feels is vague, controversial, misused, or misunderstood(“feminist,” “eco-terrorist,” “feng shui,” “multiculturalism”)
3. To explain a new or unusual term or phrase found in popular culture, slang, dialect, or within a particular geographic area or cultural group (“hip hop,” “helicopter parent,” McJobs,” “metrosexual,” “lagniappe”)
Like the other essays, you paper should be at least six paragraphs--an introduction, four body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You must not use sources, a reference, or any other type of outside materials. Your definition should be from your perspective.
Begin by listing characteristics you often associate with the term you wish to define.

Outline Format for the Extended Definition Essay
Term or phrase: mother
(Option A) Listing Thesis: A mother makes sacrifices for her family, soothes her children, serves a positive role model and, most of all, helps guide her children along the path to adulthood.
(Option B) General Thesis: The love a woman receives from her children over a lifetime more than makes up for the responsibilities and sacrifices that come with being a mother.
Main Point One: A mother routinely makes sacrifices for her family.
