A performance task: The impact of human activities on the natural environment and animals
• Big Idea
The big idea of this performance task is the relationship between human activities and the natural environment. The reason to design this big idea lies in that with the development of human society, it faces a series of environmental issues such as: water scarcity, global warming, extinction of biological species and other global environmental problems. These issues affect the future development of mankind, it is necessary for students to understand some environmental knowledge and status quo to form the concept of environmental protection early, which helps to develop awareness of environmental protection and enhance students' sense of responsibility in terms of environmental protection.
• Essential Questions
Based on the above-mentioned reasons, the essential questions are:
-What kind of impact do human activities have on the natural environment?
-What measures should mankind take to protect the environment?
-Whether the development of human society can become a reality?
• Performance Task
The purposes of this performance task are shown as follows:
-To allow students to understand some environmental problems that mankind faces, the problems include: water scarcity, global warming, species extinction, ozone depletion, desertification, and so on;
-To allow students to understand the lack of water and land desertification that our country faces, trying to explain the causes;
-To allow students to understand the implementation of the work of environmental protection and the achieved preliminary results;
-To allow students to deepen their understanding of the relationship between mankind and the environment to enhance students' environmental awareness and responsibility.
The theme of the performance task is to investigate "The impact of human activities on the natural environment and animals".
The content of the performance task includes first of all, each group is asked to design a handmade newspaper about the impact of human life on the natural environment and ecological environment. Two students will be a group to follow the requirements: the newspaper will be designed by using a sheet of A3 paper; layout of the newspaper should be reasonable, beautiful; content of the newspaper should include text and pictures, the text should clearly explain the contents of the pictures. Then, two members of each group should jointly give a lecture to explain the content of their newspapers within five minutes. Again, all students are asked to discuss about the theme of the newspaper, exploring how to take measures to protect the environment and prevent the environment from the damage of human activities. Finally, the teacher and students will evaluate the newspapers, lecture and process of discussion, recording the evaluation results.
• Differentiated Instruction
As students are more familiar with environmental issues, but many students only know vaguely about the issues, students of this part will asked to collect more information about the environmental issues that they are most concerned about. Students of this part are advised to read more background information, so they can introduce more interesting content when they give the lectures. Some capable students are encouraged and guided to propose new and valuable topics, as well as creative measures in discussion. Other students are encouraged to dare to bring forward a different point of view. Some shy and timid will be specially encouraged and guided to evaluate other students' viewpoints.
• Standards
Table 1: Standards
Items Exceeds Meets Does not meet Non-scorable
Designing newspaper The newspaper is designed beautifully; the layout is quite rational; the text is able to correctly describe what the pictures aim to convey; content of the newspaper is true and impressive The newspaper is designed properly; the layout is rational; the text is able to describe what the pictures aim to convey; most content of the newspaper is true and impressive The newspaper is designed less properly; the layout is less rational; most of the text fails to describe what the pictures aim to convey; most content of the newspaper is not true and impressive The newspaper is designed improperly; the layout is chaotic; all text fails to describe what the pictures aim to convey; the content of the newspaper is false and boring
Lecture The introduction is fluent; the attitude is positive; the speech content is accurate Most of the introduction is fluent; the attitude is proper; most of the speech content is accurate Part of the introduction is fluent; the attitude is proper; most of the speech content is accurate The introduction is incomplete; the attitude is negative; the speech content is completely incorrect
Discussion The attitude is positive; the opinion brought forward is new and valuable; be able to put forward targeted, creative measures
The attitude is positive most of the time; most of the opinion brought forward is new and valuable; be able to put forward creative measures
The attitude is negative most of the time; most of the opinion brought forward is less new and valuable; be unable to put forward creative measures
The attitude is completely negative; the opinion brought forward is old; have no idea about measures
• Theoretical Framework
Kolb (1984) believed students can not just learn knowledge from books, they should understand that the knowledge and the society, the environment and their families are closely related. Through this performance task, it not only allows students to understand relevant knowledge about environmental protection, but also helps them to clearly understand the significance of knowledge for them to deepen their understanding of the relationship between man and the environment, thus enhancing students' environmental awareness and responsibility. Dewey (1938) analyzed that students should be active rather than passive in accepting what teachers teach. This performance tasks requires students to follow their own interests to gather information, which not only cultivates their interest in learning, but also stimulates their motives of active learning. Dewey (1938) pointed out that students’ thinking should not be rigid but innovative. In this evaluation task, students are required to propose new and valuable opinion, as well as creative measures in discussion. Students will be encouraged to dare to propose a different point of view, which is conducive to encouraging students to break old patterns of thinking to form thinking habits of thinking problem from many angles. Dewey (1938) thought that students should not only acquire knowledge, but also cultivate ability in learning. In the past, students just listen to teachers at class, they have learned a lot but failed to cultivate their ability. This evaluation task can help students to cultivate a variety of ability. For example, in the process of designing the newspaper, students will learn how to collect information and select what they really need, cultivating students’ ability to work with their peers. In giving lecture, students’ speaking ability will be developed. In discussion, it cultivates students’ ability in debate, innovative thinking, and so on. All in all, the performance task not only enable students to understand the relevant knowledge of the relationship between mankind and the environment, but also fully cultivate relevant ability of students’.
