Reports

● A report must be unbiased, i.e. has not opinion

● Reports are different than other papers.
● You are just reporting facts, you are not
proving a point or making an argument
● You should only use 3rd person (it, he, she)
● Passive sentences are very useful in reports.
If you find you want to use 'I' or 'you', try
making the sentence passive
● You will still have an introduction, a thesis, a
conclusion, body paragraphs, and topic
sentences.
● You will use transitions between paragraphsReport Structure
● There are three common ways to organize a
report
● They depend on what you are reporting on:
– Unfamiliar Information
– An event
– Comparing and contrasting two things, ideas,

Reporting on an Unfamiliar Topic
● Begin with a hook (anecdote, quote, etc.)
● Provide Background Information & Thesis
● Describe your topic and define any key terms
● Explain by:
– Comparing
– Classifying
– Analyzing Causes or effects
– Explaining Processes
● Conclude by restating thesis and referring to

you may use websites, but I must approve
them.
● Email me the link to the website you want to
use, I will email you back letting you know if it
is acceptable.
● If you fail to get a source approved, then you
will lose points on each draft you use the
source in.Evaluating Sources
● Once your have 2 sources (approved if they
are websites):
– Print 2 copies of the Evaluating Sources
Worksheet
– Fill out the worksheet
– Turn in the worksheet with your 2nd draftHomework
● Your topic is due by 5:00 p.m. on WebCT
● If it is late you lose 10% for each day it is late
● You may have to pick a new topic if someone already
chose your topic
● Your first draft is due next Friday in class
– It must complete!!
● Begin researching!!! Go to the library, talk to
librarians, use the Marriott Website
● We will meet in the DiBona Writing Lab on Monday.
● Come prepared to work on your first draft
