The overall marking criteria for the module are:
This module will be assessed through the submission of a dissertation of 20,000 words. The dissertation will be evaluated against the following criteria:
• That the dissertation adequately defines an appropriate and agreed issue or area of investigation.
• That the issue was examined through a well designed and articulated method of enquiry.
• That the execution of the dissertation was adequately achieved.
• That the data collection was appropriate and the data has been analysed and assessed to an appropriate level.
• That the findings are related to the wider theoretical issues of the topic area.
• That the students can adequately reflect upon and appreciate the strengths and weaknesses of their own work.
• That the student has adhered to the university’s guidelines on research ethics.

Distinction
≥ 70% Direct relevance to the title: address the implications and nuances of the title. Employs appropriate research techniques, methodology and paradigms. Conclusion contains originality. Extensive knowledge evident through appropriate application of that knowledge gained through very good research. Research of a quality that results in a clear, logical outcome. Research to be original and centred upon the research problem. Coherent and logically structured making highly creative use of the research in terms of the theoretical model(s) employed and the arguments presented. Highly original, exhibiting a high level of independent thought. Originality of research, of methodology and of ideas. An excellently written thesis with an extensive bibliography. Lucid and resourceful style conveying a high level of authority over the subject.
Merit
60 – 69% Directly relevant to the title: able to address the implications, assumptions and nuances. Effective use of an excellent knowledge and thorough understanding of relevant research. A very good use of analysis of the evidence, arguments and research undertaken, resulting in clear and lucid outcome containing original elements. Coherent and logically structured making creative use of an appropriate mode of argument and research. Distinctive work containing elements of originality throughout with a good level of independent thought evident. A very well written thesis with a reasonably extensive and relevant bibliography conveying lucidity and a good level of authority over the subject.
Pass
50 – 59% Directly relevant to the title. Adequate knowledge of relevant material – clear application of its significance. Good analysis based on good research. There may be some level of description and analytical purpose may not always be clearly maintained Generally coherent and logical attempt to make a coherent argument. Structured use of appropriate mode of argument and research. Occasionally at this level there may be a lack of coherence and of appropriate research. May contain some distinctive or independent thinking with elements of originality. The work will be sound and there may be some personal opinion. Reasonably well written thesis in a readable style with an acceptable bibliography.
Fail
< 50% Major problems concerning relevance of research and total lack of originality. Shows only a basic understanding of a limited range of research and methods. Largely descriptive with little evidence of analytical ability. Basic ideas evident but not supported by independent research with lack of clarity and coherence. Largely derivative, no elements of originality in evidence. Rather poorly written, deficiencies in expression, lacking clarity, deficiencies in the bibliography.
