该IS化工科技位于中国上海。 IS化工科技从事提供积木和筛选药物发现和临床前开发阶段使用的化合物。该公司参与了研究，合成和生产医药中间体和精细化学品。 IS化工科技倡导创新的服务管理理念，旨在加速客户的制药研发过程中。由IS化学技术实验室，包括苯，吡啶，嘧啶，酸，碱，核苷，喹啉，硫代化合物，吲哚，吡咯烷，哌啶，哌嗪，和其它精细化学品衍生物合成产物。
I would like to thank Mr. Dennis and Ms. Yuan Yuan for their guidance, trust and infinite patience in supervising and teaching me knowledge in industrial chemistry and skills in area of customer service. I would also like to thank them for exposing me to the world of chemistry and for proofreading this document.

CHAPTER II INTRODUCTION: IS Chemical Technology
The IS Chemical Technology is located in Shanghai, China. IS Chemical Technology engaged in offers building blocks and screening compounds used in drug discovery and pre-clinical development. The company involved in researching, synthesizing, and manufacturing pharmaceutical intermediates and fine chemicals. IS Chemical Technology advocates innovative service management philosophy, and aims at accelerating customers’ pharmaceutical R&D process. Products synthesized by the laboratory of IS Chemical Technology including derivative of benzenes, pyridines, pyrimidines, acids, bases, nucleosides, quinolines, thio compounds, indoles, pyrrolidines, piperidines, piperazines, and other fine chemicals.
The target customers of IS Chemical Technology includes but not limited to individual customers like researchers, professionals, experimental chemists, analytical chemists, medical chemists, biochemists, and procurement managers; and industries customers like drug companies, research institutes, perfumeries, contract research organizations (CRO), contract manufacture organization (CMO), academic institutes, for example university laboratories, professors and graduates), and etc. IS Chemical Technology is a global company with customers all over the world and most of the company’s customers are come from United State, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Korea, and India.
The IS Chemical Technology company is operating in the Chemical Building that located in East China University of Science and Technology. IS Chemical Technology has a chemistry research laboratory which is equipped with the latest and industry centric facilities. There is a High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) that used to increase in the analysis of chemical sample to separate and detect impurities or additives or contaminants. Centrifuges are used in the chemistry laboratory for isolating and separating suspensions. Then, there is laminar air flow which is indispensable tools for the laboratory. The laminar flow hood aims to provide protection for open vessels of chemicals, solvents or powders. Also, the chemical laboratory is equipped with rotary evaporator that use for the efficient and gentle removal of solvents from samples by evaporation. Next, an autoclave is an instrument that used to sterilize equipment and supplies by subjecting them to high pressure saturated steam at 121℃ for around 15 to 20 minutes depending on the size of the load and the contents. It also used in the pre-disposal treatment and sterilization of waste material. Besides the above mentioned facilities, the chemical laboratory also equipped with others basic laboratory equipments including incubators, freezers, shakers, digesters, balances, glassware, grinders and so on.
Next to the chemical research laboratory, there is a storage room to store chemicals and reagents safe under a proper condition and environment. The storage room is well-ventilated. Inside the storage room, each of the bottles of the chemical is well sealed and labels with date of purchase, name of the chemical, appearance of the chemical, catalogue number and CAS number, hazard sign, key risk and safety phrases. All the chemicals and reagents are being stored welled in the room. Inside the storage room is divided into five chemical storage areas: sulphuric and nitric acids area, corrosive acids area (hydrochloride, acetic and formic), corrosive bases area (ammonium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide, and potassium hydroxide), flammables reagents area, and general storage area. In addition, the like classes of compounds are being stored together and away from other compounds with which they might react if their containers leaked or were broken.
CHAPTER III WORKING EXPERIENCES第三章工作经验
During the course of my internship at Shanghai IS Chemical Technology, I was placed in the customer service department and have gained a lot of knowledge about operations under the supervision and guidance of my internship supervisor. Besides, Shanghai IS Chemical Technology also has had provides me the opportunity to learn and practise for the preparation of documents like Certificate of Analysis and Material Safety Data Sheet for their chemical products. During my whole internship, I was rotated in all the different departments of the company and was thoroughly briefed about the procedures of chemical manufacturing and trading by the concerned staff.
My working hours during the internship in this company is from 8.30am to 5.30pm from Monday to Friday. Every morning, I start my day by checking inbox e-mails from customers. Usually there will be about 70 to 100 e-mails received in the morning. Most of them are mails of chemical products quotation inquiry from customers. I will filter out all the quote inquiry mails and upload it onto the company internal control system for the purchasing department staffs to send and reply appropriate quotation to the customers.
There is an internal control system of IS Chemical Technology that plays key role in the operation of this company. Generally, the internal control system plays role on protects the company businesses from abuse and fraud; it ensures the information and data we’re receiving is accurate, reliable and timely; and promoting the operational efficiency. There are five types of management options available on the internal control system, namely “vendor management”, “product inquiry management”, “order management”, “stock management” and “financial management”. Sections that I will come into contact with during the internship period are “product inquiry management” and “order management”.
In the “product inquiry management” section, there is an “upload new inquiry” option. I will then update the quotation inquiry to purchasing department through this internal control system option by filling in information required according to the template provided on it and upload. Information that needs to fill up including:
i. Customer information: name, company name, email address, contact number and country.
ii. Enquiry product information: product name, CAS number, catalogue number, and quantity required.
Every chemical product that offered and manufactured by Shanghai IS Chemical Technology has its own catalogue number. The function of those catalogue numbers is to identify the belonging group of that particular chemical product. In additions, the internal control system also recognizes the stock availability of the chemical products by its catalogue number. Besides, a buyer can review the price and cost of a material wanted by the catalogue number.
Generally, the steps of chemical trading of Shanghai IS Chemical Technology are as below:
1. Quotation inquiry from customer- Normally the quotation is via e-mail. I will upload the information onto internal system. Then, the system will automatically distribute the enquiry to responsible staffs at purchasing department. In addition, IS Chemical Technology also accepts the inquiry via fax and telephone.
2. Purchasing department reply the material quotation to the customer- Normally they will first check the buying history of this chemical products, if the product is ready stock, they can reply the quotation immediately; if it is out of stock, they will check with technical department whether they can proceed to synthesis process of this product; and if the technical department having no future plan on synthesising that chemical product, the purchasing staff will then source it from others cooperation vendors or suppliers. Otherwise the special situations, IS Chemical Technology will reply the customer inquiry within 24 hours. The aforesaid special situations include the legal holidays, the service interruption or communication fault arising from the extremely disastrous weather. #p#分页标题#e#
3. Order placing from customer- once the customer received quotation from Shanghai IS Chemical Technology and satisfies with the quote given, the customer will place an order and send purchase order confirmation to us via e-mail as well. Along the purchase order confirmation mail, must provides information such as purchase order number, chemical catalogue number, CAS number, chemical name and formula, size, purity, quantity, unit of measure and any additional product or packaging specifications, billing and shipping address. Besides, the end-user name, contact number and e-mail address also required along with the purchase order confirmation mail. This purchase confirmation mail will then upload onto the internal control system for record and for the purchasing department or technical department staffs to process with the order. Otherwise the special situation, we will send a email to confirm the order within 24 hours upon the receipt of order and confirm the amount/ delivery data and relevant charges and the order comes into effect on that day. We will send back a confirmation mail to inform the customer about the status, lead time and delivery date for that customer.
4. Product payment- When the order is confirmed, the customer will make payment before we proceed to the preparation of shipment for the material. After the payment from that customer received, staff from account department will then send out an official invoice for the customer prior to payment. In the others hand, some of the regular customers are allowed with a payment term net 30 days. The IS Chemical Technology accepts any of the following means of payment:
i. Credit card;
ii. PAYPAL; and
iii. Telegraphic Transfer (T/T)
The following means of payment are currently not accepted by IS Chemical Technology:
i. Letter of credit; and
ii. Check
5. Product preparation- Before ship out the chemical products, the IS Chemical Technology quality control team will test the quality of the chemical products. The product must successfully pass the quality control before being shipped out. Then, I will prepare a document namely “Certificate of Analysis” according to the test result. Certificate of Analysis is defined as an authenticated document, issued by an appropriate authority, that certifies the quality and purity of pharmaceuticals, and animal and plant products being exported (Business Dictionary, n.d). The “Certificate of Analysis” is prepared to ship along with the product. Test that the quality control team will perform generally including:
i. Melting point and boiling point- the determination of melting points is used in pharmacopoeial specifications primarily for identification of the substance concerned. This is because the presence of impurities in a chemical product results will lowering the melting point or may cause its melting range to be extended. Similar for liquids, the determination of boiling point can give information that contributes to the identification and purity estimation of liquid compounds.
ii. Residue on ignition- to measure the weight of the residual substance when sulphuric acid is added to the sample and then ignited. For example, a specification as “not more than 0.10%” indicates that when determined by igniting 1 to 2 g of the sample, accurately weighed, with sulphuric acid at 450 to 550 °C for 3 hours, the weight of the residue is not more than 0.10% of the sample. If the sample is large crystals or lumps, it will be quickly crush into particles which are not larger than about 2 mm in diameter to test for its residues on ignition.
iii. Specific optical rotation- The optical rotation is the angle through which the plane of polarization is rotated when polarized light passes through a layer of a liquid. This optical rotation is measured with polarimeter and it is used for the pharmacopoeial purposes mainly to establish the identity of the substance. It may also used to test the purity of the product (absence of optically non-active foreign substances) and as an assay procedure.
iv. Determination of pH- pH is a value characteristic of an aqueous solution which represents its acidity or alkalinity.
v. Phase solubility- this analysis is a technique for quantitatively determining the purity of a substance through the application of precise solubility measurements. At a given temperature, a definite amount of pure substance is soluble in a definite quantity of solvent. This means that, the resulting solution is saturated in respect of the particular substance, but the solution remains unsaturated in respect of the other substances even though such substances may be closely related in chemical structure and physical properties to the particular substance being tested. Therefore, constancy of solubility indicates that a material is pure or free from foreign substances. Conversely, variability of solubility indicates the presence of impurity.
vi. Identification of material- the technician teams will use a variety of techniques to perform a material identification according to the suitability of the method to the material. Identification methods that they will perform generally including: gas chromatography (GC), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC); thin layer chromatography (TLC); and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Through these various types of analysis, the purity of that compound can be confirmed. Such methods are particularly valuable for the determination of small amounts of impurities.
The analysis test that should be performed for one particular product is depends on the nature of the product itself. This is because not all the analysis test will suitable for a single product, for example, the test of melting point and boiling point is not suitable for an enzyme or an active compound because the testing of boiling point will always lead to inconsistencies results. Hence, the quality control team will select suitable analysis test for that product to test for its quality. Then, I will collect the analysis test result that being performed and prepare a “Certificate of Analysis” for that product.
6. Product shipment- before shipment of the product being made, we will send the analysis report for the customer to confirm its quality. Once the customer agreed with the quality of that product, shipment will be made. Here, I have been issued to make necessary labelling of the product’s parcel or package. Information that contains on the label including product name, product CAS number, product catalogue number, product purity, product quantity and batch number. We will then send the tracking number of parcel to customer via email on the day of delivery. International freight agencies that the IS Chemical Technology used commonly including FedEx, DHL and EMS. And the real-time freight status can be inquired on the websites of these freight agencies through the corresponding tracking number. Customer can always ask the customer service department for the status of order via email at any time, and we will generally reply the email within 24 hours. Even though IS Chemical Technology commits to make every effort to ensure the delivery on schedule, however, due to particularity of chemical synthesis and transport of chemical goods, in case of one or many of following circumstances, the delayed delivery will still occur:
i. Such force majeure as the severe weather
ii. Customs inspection or detained shipment
iii. Goods are lost or error delivery in the transport
In case of any of the above happened, we will inform the customer as soon as possible and arrange or make suitable solution.
Finally, the customer received the goods and the trading process is done successfully.
CHAPTER IV CONCLUSION总结
In conclusion, this internship in Shanghai IS Chemical Technology has been excellent and rewarding experience. As my degree course focuses mainly on biology, my time at Shanghai IS Chemical Technology really opened my eyes to the chemical and pharmaceutical industry. I have learned the various type of chemical analysis such as HPLC, NMR and titration. I have also learned how is a operation of chemical trading. In addition, I have had the chance to gain plenty of useful and important skills and knowledge in customer service department.
Besides the technical lessons, I have also learned to be responsible. One main thing that I have learned through this internship is time management skills as well as self-motivation. I really appreciate the way I have been guided through this internship program with IS Chemical Technology. This was definitely an excellent experience!#p#分页标题#e#
