Assessment Outline – Summer 2011
This is an extended referenced essay writing task that requires you to demonstrate your ability to develop a critical line of argument on a topic related to your field/interest on one of the broad themes covered in the Skills for Study 3 module. The following gives you more information.
Task: Write a 2000 word Extended Essay
Video games are increasingly used in education. Critically evaluate claims that these games can be valuable educational tools and can be used to enhance learning in ways traditional methods cannot.
In your essay, you should refer to a number of sources from the Skills for Study 3 Study Pack, but you MUST also refer to at least 5 other sources which you have found. You must ensure that the sources you use are academic and reliable, in particular ensure that Internet sources are accessed via a reputable academic database or an academic journal.
What you will be assessed on:
1. Establishing a clear purpose or thesis statement of your essay
2. Developing a http://www.ukassignment.org/ygkczy/ critical line of argument, expanding and supporting the arguments with subsidiary points, reasons and relevant examples
3. Identifying, evaluating and refuting counter arguments, opinions or solutions
4. Writing in an evaluative/interpretative rather than descriptive manner
5. The extent and depth of your research of independently found sources
6. Incorporating others’ work effectively by quoting, summarizing and paraphrasing viewpoints, using in-text citations accurately
7. Compiling a complete, accurate, consistently referenced bibliography (standard Harvard system) at the end of the essay.
8. The clarity of expression used in your writing, especially register and style.

Before you start writing your essay you MUST write a plan of the essay. The plan must be typed and printed. Your tutor will inform you when you should submit the plan. Your tutor will review the plan and give you feedback. It is essential that you analyse your tutor’s feedback and follow their instructions and suggestions when you write the essay.

You must submit TWO hard copies of your essay and ONE electronic copy to Turn It In.
• Use a standard academic font (e.g. Arial), size 12 and use 1.5 line spacing between lines.

Your assessment must include a title page containing the following information:
i. Module Code
ii. Class/Group: (e.g. Group A)
iii. Module Title
iv. Assessment Title (Extended Essay)
v. Assignment Title (Your chosen full title)
vi. Tutor Name
vii. Student ID Number: (please add your ID number only and NOT your name)
viii. Date of Submission:
ix. Word count of your essay (not just the word limit)
• Each page of your assignment should have a header with your student ID number, module code and the name of your class tutor. Do not write your full name.
• All pages should be numbered and stapled together.
Penalties
You may be penalised according to the GIC Assessment Rules if:
• You write an essay that is above or below the stated word limit by more than 20%
• You hand in your assignment later than the stated deadline
• Any part of http://www.ukassignment.org/ygkczy/ your work is found to have been directly copied from a source (e.g. a book, another student’s essay, an internet website) without the appropriate referencing convention
Please be reminded that this must be written by you. If the level and sophistication of your language is considerably higher than other pieces of written work you have produced, it will be assumed that you were given unfair assistance and you will either be penalised for plagiarism or receive no credit for clarity of expression.
You will also need to submit an electronic copy to your tutor via Turn It In.
