When we see a person running around with a pen, a notepad, an audio recording device and maybe a camera in hand, it most probably is a journalist. They could be at many places at a time getting information to be released as news to us all. According to the Merriam-Webster, a journalist is a "person employed by a newspaper, magazine, or radio or television station to gather, write, or report news."(Merriam-Webster 2009) Journalists often are spread in to several fields and each of it has different requirements. Works of journalists appear in respective newspapers, magazines, websites on the internet and even on the television, enlightening the target audience with information and questions to ponder and debate about. Many journalists work together to form a company that sells news to the public and this is how newspaper companies and television networks are formed. There are many modes of journalism which includes arts scene, business and trade news and the entertainment industry. Also other range of journalism covers the environment to the latest in fashion to modern medicine, not forgetting the ever lively politics to science discoveries and spans wide into sports, technology, and the weather, which is a reason for many conversations around the world. Reason for such a wide array of modes is because of the wide array of individuals that have different likes and interests. Looking into a newspaper, sections of the print are divided into specific categories to fit in the various modes of journalism. Readers are constantly updated on various happenings and developments in the respective fields through the many modes of journalism. With each mode being covered, there is something for everyone.
Summary
Journalism stretches the time and space in the minds of journalists. It happens when there is so much news and so little that that they get things done in the nick of time just before their deadlines. Beforehand, they have to understand several laws to protect themselves from being exploited and other people stealing their hard work. The three main laws needed for them to be prepared of are laws of copyright, defamation and contempt, if they ever find themselves needing this knowledge for personal justice while on the job. Journalists do not work on the normal nine to five basis but just about anytime something happens. Even in the wee hours of the morning. Take for example a forest fire that occurs at three o'clock in the morning, a journalist will be assigned either by their superiors or ticked off by a friend that knows about the disaster in real time and they would have to be there in a jiffy. Whether under rain or shine, indoors or outdoors, journalists must work and adapt to all the environments and conditions for the information they need and often times they require to do a lot of traveling around to get what is needed.Such an informative field requires a massive amount of work and mental strength. At the point of starting to go on to be a journalist, several work criteria and requirements needs to be present if not, acquired. The most important requirement is of course being able to write clearly, be concise and pointing out the objective of the news quickly and accurately. Having a widespread general knowledge is a great time saver as doing research consumes time and the information found might not even be as accurate as understanding the subject in mind. In sync with general knowledge, geographical knowledge assists greatly in traveling from one place to another in gathering information. The potential journalist needs to keep being updated and interested on the current events especially on the subject matter that they are covering. The added knowledge helps relate the other news to the ones they are covering. Greater advantage if the potential journalist keeps in touch with the 21st century technology as being able to use the computer and keyboard is a way to speed their work up. Developing shorthand skills assists in making a long story short for the potential journalist. With all the skills enveloped, a very interesting journalistic career lies ahead.
Conclusion
Though one can learn a lot from this field, journalists also face dangerous harmful and life threatening situations. Looking only at the small scale, journalists covering a murder related case will have a risk of being attacked by the murder suspect when the journalist is in close proximity with the suspect when the Law Enforcement Officers are escorting the suspect to another location. The journalists could be kicked or assaulted especially the photographer who tries to get a snapshot of the suspect's face. Journalists that cover crime cases and reporting the truth behind the crime might be in great harm as they are exposing the criminal activities. Often times the criminals take matters onto their own hands and the journalists gets the beating for doing their job. On the bigger scale, journalists covering war-torn countries have higher risk of death due to the war and being abducted by the enemies of the country they are reporting for, for a bid to stop the war. American News provider, USA Today(2006) reports that according to the non-profit Committee to Protect Journalists, since March 2003, conflict in Iraq has resulted in 74 journalists' deaths and 41 abductions.Without the tireless time-racing, blood and sweat of the individuals on the job, the truth and happenings around each corner of the country and the world will never be known. Each striving hard to report stories in attempt to be in a higher position in the job hierarchy. Being skilled in language, writing and presenting the news in a psychological manner, the journalist shares the information with the world. Journalists exist so that the ever busy people in the world do not need to be at many places at a time to know what is happening. These individuals and groups are in this field because of their utmost interest of wanting to know and wanting to learn. The general public understands more of what is happening around them and around the world as well as whatever of concern to their personal lives |
