Dissertation Title:
The missing importances of CSR from the case study of Sanlu Grou
Working title:
The missing importances of CSR from the case study of Sanlu Group
Background
Corporate social responsibility (CSR), also called corporate responsibility, corporate citizenship, responsible business and corporate social opportunity(Wikipedia, 2008), is a concept whereby organizations consider the interests of society by taking responsibility for the impact of their activities on customers, suppliers, employees, shareholders, communities and other stakeholders, as well as the environment. This obligation is seen to extend beyond the statutory obligation to comply with legislation and sees organizations voluntarily taking further steps to improve the quality of life for employees and their families as well as for the local community and society at large. The case study of Sanlu Group is a Chinese dairy products company based in Shijiazhuang (Anon, 2008), the capital city of Hebei Province. The state-owned company is one of the oldest and most popular brands of infant formula in China. Sanlu is 43% owned by New Zealand's Fonterra (Wikipedia, 2008). The reason to choose this company is that, in September 2008 Sanlu came to international attention due to product concerns regarding its infant milk formula, which was discovered to have been contaminated with melamine, a non-alimentary chemical which causes kidney stones (Xinhua, 2008). Tens of thousands of babies have been made ill, and some have died (BBC, 2008). It fails to consider their interests of the society. This company is chosen due to the serious impact of the causes it makes to the society. On 27 September 2008, China Economic Net reported that Sanlu may have been bankrupted and soon be taken over by Beiijng Sanyuan Food Company Ltd (China Daily, 2008).
Rationale
Socially responsible business practices are where the corporation adapt and conducts discretionary business practices and investments that support social causes to improve community well-being and protect the environment (Kotler and Lee, 2005, 208). One of the main reasons that Sanlu Group loses its CSR is lacking community, which includes employees of corporation, suppliers, as well as members in each parts of the company.#p#分页标题#e#
As Koler (2005) had been pointed out, there are some activities can affect typical socially responsible business practices as follow:
1. Designing facilities to meet or exceed environmental and safety recommendations and guidelines, for example, using this action, other companies may know how to increase their products’ quality.
2. Selecting suppliers based on their willingness to adopt or maintain sustainable environmental practices. Sanlu Group is a good example for this action. The company employs many curb famers to supply their products.
3. Measuring, tracking, and reporting of responsible goals and actions, including the bad news, as well as the good. Is the scandal only in Sanlu Group? Or other same facilities also have the problems?
And so on …
How should company do the most good by using CSR (Crane, 2008)?
1. Enhance public awareness and concern for the cause through support of promotional communication efforts, such as Sanlu Group expends their market to the global.
2. Support efforts to influence individual behavior change and industry business http://www.ukassignment.org/ practices that improve public health and safety and protect the environment. (e.g., Sanlu Group had been invested to build some schools in some poor parts of China. But, it loses the safety of its products.
3. Build a strong corporate reputation, as key constituents observe actions that support promises of good corporate citizenship and responsibility. Comparing other successful company, why they can do better than Sanlu Group.
4. Support marketing objectives by building traffic, enhancing brand positioning, creating product differentiation, and reaching niche markets. However, company should not only to make their objectives by reaching profits.
And so on…
Research question and objectives:
1. The history and associated developments of CSR.
2. how does CSR impact customers, suppliers, employees, shareholders, communities and other stakeholders, as well as the environment?
3. The affect to stakeholder, corporate governance in Sanlu Group.
4. What is the conflict between CSR and the company?
5. Disclosure of social and environmental responsibility and the ethic of the company to CSR.
6. How the framework for social accounting, auditing and reporting should developed to avoid irresponsible management?
7. how other companies use CSR to survive in the future (include the socially responsible business practices)
8. Look forward to the Chinese Market, and find out some feasible methods to develop CSR.
Research Methods:
A literature review in the areas of corporate social responsibility and framework theory will be prepared.
Secondary data such as government websites (how does Sanlu Group drop and breakup in the stock market?) will be used to assess their view of who the stakeholders are and their concerns.#p#分页标题#e#
An analysis of the change of company will be processed, which include chairman decisions and scandal reasons.
